After around 2 weeks with only 1 Hollywood movie premiering in Indonesia, today there was not 1 or 2 or even 3 new movies, but 4 altogether. Quite amazing actually, as it gave us a variety of options to choose from. Since my wife was not really keen in watching the newest movie playing in US cinemas we finally opted to see this one in CGV. And with today being a public holiday, we were able to see it in the afternoon. Well here goes more on the movie.
Brief Story Line
Sean Falco (Robert Sheehan - The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) and Derek (Carlito Olivero) were a couple of best friends who worked as valet drivers for an Italian restaurant. Unbeknownst to the owner, they would sometime burglarize the car owners' house using the GPS system from the cars. Other than his usual work at night, Sean was actually a struggling photographer and had a college student girlfriend named Riley (Jacqueline Byers).
One night during their usual activity, Sean went to the house owned by a wealthy businessman Cale (David Tennant - Ferdinand, Doctor Who TV series etc) to do some robbing. To his shock, Sean saw a young woman (Kerry Condon - Ned Kelly, Rome TV series etc) who was held in captivity in the house. Feeling sorry for the woman, Sean would try to help her before Cale return.
But could Sean help the woman that easily? Find them all in this interesting horror-thriller movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well, I was a bit doubtful at first when seeing this movie. I was not really expecting a lot since there was no major Hollywood name as the lead cast (even if I have seen David Tennant few times earlier) and the plot seemed a bit similar to another low budget terrifying horror movie titled Don't Breathe that I enjoyed last time. So I was quite surprised when it turned out the plot was totally different and it was very intriguing to see how the story would unfold.
The movie was actually quite suspenseful, with the occasional shocking scene that would make my wife screamed a bit, but in truth the attraction was not solely on those moments. This film would not have been very interesting had it not for the performance of David Tennant as the psycho sadistic kidnapper. His portrayal of the villain was fantastic and he was truly convincing as a bad guy. Just like what he did in season 1 of Jessica Jones as the main super villain (not the boring second season), he was really good in playing the antagonistic role.
Aside from that performance, the story itself was pretty unique. There was a bit of a cat and mouse psychological thriller as well to put it more interesting. And what my wife and I noticed also was the director Dean Devlin who previously directed the movie Geostorm, put a nice attention to detail, such as the wireless phone, or the wrench and few others that would seemed unimportant at the beginning but somehow would provide some surprising usefulness or information later on. And for a movie that had a duration of 1 hr 47 minutes, it did not feel too long. The pace was quite steady and the beginning part was not boring plus the character developments were quite decent.
For this kind of movie, you definitely should not expect too much special effects and the only part that required it was averagely done. Good thing that was not the important part. One thing that I also like about the movie was the realistic feeling of the story. It was having a real simple plot. Just a bad person trying to do the right thing and be a good Samaritan (hence the title) but everything failed apart. There were other minor supporting characters in the movie but they did not leave me too much impression. But anyway the performance of the few main characters quite made up for it.
Overall, this was an enjoyable ride. A bit thrilling, quite suspenseful and having a decent enough finale. My only surprise was the film did not have the best performance in the US box office even though it did not have poor critics rating (Rotten Tomatoes rating was 52% which was better than lots of other movies which was more successful commercially). It was a pity though as I think this one deserved at least to be enjoyed at the theater to feel the thrilling effect. My wife and I were able to enjoy this movie, despite having a poor sound system in the theater and not very good projector lacking the brightness, plus some of the audience were talking very loudly in front of us. In the end, this was a worthwhile movie to be seen in the cinema for adult or teenagers and definitely not suitable for children. No post end credit scene either in case you are wondering. If you are looking for a different kind of horror-thriller movie (not the supernatural or ghost/spirits kind of movie), then this one definitely is an option.
Happy watching!
