A Bad Moms Christmas - Sequel to Those Bad Moms Who Just Wanted to Have Their Own Christmas

It was quite surprising that the sequel to Bad Moms was already made and entered the theaters in just a year time. I saw the original back in September last year with my wife and now we could see the sequel aimed for Christmas that started to play in Indonesian cinemas today. My wife and I chose to see this film in CGV Grand Indonesia. So let us get on with the movie.

Brief Story Line

The story still revolved around the moms from the original movie: Amy (Mila Kunis - Max Payne, That 70's Show TV series etc), Kiki (Kristen Bell - When in Rome, Veronica Mars TV series etc) and Carla (Kathryn Hahn - Captain Fantastic, Crossing Jordan TV series etc). They were all quite stressful with the Christmas day right around the corner. Being a mother certainly gave them a lot of pressure of having to make the perfect Christmas celebration. Things become a lot more complicated when suddenly each of their mother coming to their house.

Amy's mother named Ruth (Christine Baranski - Trolls, The Good Wife TV series etc) was a strict and very critical of Amy and wanted to have a perfect huge Christmas party, even though Amy only wanted to have simple one with her children and her boyfriend Jesse (Jay Hernandez - Suicide Squad, Max etc) with his young daughter. Meanwhile Kiki's mother named Sandy (Cheryl Hines - Curb Your Enthusiasm, Suburgatory TV series etc) was a widow who wanted to be as close as possible with her only daughter which totally irritated Kiki. And finally Carla's mother named Isis (Susan Sarandon - Thelma & Louis, Stepmom etc) who was very seldom visiting her and usually came with having dubious intention.

Amy, Kiki and Carla vowed that they would not let their mothers ruined their plan for the perfect Christmas and they did everything to achieve that. So how would these six mothers be able to cope with one another? Find them all in this Christmas comedy movie of the bad moms.

End of Brief Story Line

Well it's another Christmas comedy movie that I saw during this 2 weeks time. The first one was Daddy's Home 2 which I saw just few days ago and coincidentally having few similarities such as being a sequel to a commercially quite successful comedy movie and having parents to visit for Christmas but would wreak havoc during the Christmas holidays. My wife and I were also quite in awe with the similarity. But there was 1 very huge difference being this movie was an R rated comedy so it had raunchy jokes and lots of F word being used, while that movie was having PG-13 rating.

As a sequel to the movie which my wife and I loved last year, we were both quite entertained with this film. It had those jokes that we loved last year, but I personally was a bit disappointed with 2 or 3 scenes that were cut by the Indonesian censorship body (guess I would have to probably look for the uncut version few months from now to find out about those scenes). Those were scenes involving Ty Swindle (Justin Hartley - Smallville, The Young and the Restless TV series etc), the guy who Carla had a crush on plus a scene involving Isis.

Apart from the jokes, actually this sequel had more emotional moments compared to the original movie which was a delightful surprise and fit the Christmas theme. My wife was pretty moved by the scenes involving Amy and her father Hank (Peter Gallagher - While You Were Sleeping, Covert Affairs TV series etc) but especially Amy and Ruth, so watch out for that scene. This movie also had many songs but unfortunately aside from the Christmas songs, I was not familiar with the rest of them. Unlike the original movie where I knew and liked most of the soundtrack songs.

The casting of the 3 moms were quite spot on. Christine Baranski was very convincing as an over critical mother while Susan Sarandon looked so comfortable in her role as a really bad mouthed mother and distant from her child. Cheryl Hines also quite believable as a mother who had no boundaries with her child. However, those new characters felt that they took the spotlight from the original 3 moms. The main story of this sequel now revolved around the relationship among the 6 moms with Christmas as background and thus the jokes seemed to be lesser compared to the original which made the movie was enjoyable but in different way. I personally felt that I enjoyed the original movie more than this one in terms of the comedic moments, but it is still an entertaining movie. And do not worry about critics on this kind of movie as usually they would find any flaws in such movies anyway.

So if you are looking for a Christmas comedy movie and wanted to get into the Christmas mood, plus if you loved those "bad" mothers, then definitely should see this movie to enjoy their appearance. Reminder that you must see the original movie first before seeing this sequel to appreciate more of this movie. And you got to be ready for those raunchy jokes as well. If you are not a fan of those kind of movies, then better avoid this one. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
