(Mini Series) Something Very Bad is Going to Happen - An Intelligently Done Psychological Horror Thriller Series

I was aware about this series since few weeks ago which sounded interesting despite being a horror genre. So when it was finally released two days ago, I immediately gave it a try after finishing second season of another series and finished it last night. All right then, let's get on with it now.

Brief Story Line

Rachel (Camila Morrone - Death Wish 2018 remake, Daisy Jones & the Six mini series etc) and her fiancé Nicky (Adam DiMarco - The White Lotus season 2, The Order TV series etc) were on a road trip to Nicky's home to have their wedding party in one week's time. Along the way, Rachel kept on feeling something bad was going to happen and experienced few shocking and scary turn of events till they finally reached their destination.

In Nicky's home, Rachel were introduced to the family which consisted of the parents Dr. Boris Cunningham (Ted Levine - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Shutter Island etc) and Victoria (Jennifer Jason Leigh - Crime 101, The Hateful Eight etc), Nicky's older brother Jules (Jeff Wilbusch - The Calling TV series, Keep Breathing mini series etc) & his second wife Nell (Karla Crome - Lazarus  mini series, Misfits TV series etc) with Jules' son Jude (Sawyer Fraser) and Nicky's sister Portia (Gus Birney - Black Rabbit mini series, Giving Birth to a Butterfly etc). However, their behavior were very strange towards Rachel and made her really uncomfortable and suspected something was up.

So what would happen to Rachel and why did she had such bad feeling? You could find out in this series.

End of Brief Story Line

Well that was pretty interesting. To be honest I did not have any knowledge on the plot of the series. The reason why I thought it sounded intriguing was the fact it was executive produced by the Duffer brothers who created that wonderful and one of the most entertaining series in the past decade Stranger Things. However they were not the creators of this completely different kind series as it was created by Haley Z. Boston who also served as the showrunner and Exec. Producer.

Anyway the series had a rather eerie feeling and the first episode had few several jump scare scenes that successfully shocked me and even my wife who was watching other things due to the amazing sound effects. The eerie and sometimes scary atmosphere were felt continuously till the 4th episode which to me was the most intelligent as it has a mind blowing twist that I did not see coming. Subsequent to that episode though, the series felt less scary but it did not reduce the curiosity feel of how it would finish. The 6th episode did provide few scary moments while the penultimate has a different style with lots of one shot scene.

However, despite a quite great finale in the 8th episode, I felt the major disagreement scene was too long and made me less satisfied. Although I was happy with the conclusion of every character, I did not like the ending of the major lead character as it did not feel in line with the way he was shown especially towards the end. I also sometimes felt that the series was a bit too long and could have been shortened to 6 episodes, but I guess 8 is the magic number for original Netflix mini series.

I thought the cast did wonderful job in here and performed their roles convincingly, especially Camila Morrone who I just saw again in 2nd season of The Night Manager. Other than those I mentioned above, there were only few notable characters i.e. Rachel's mother Alexandra (Victoria Pedretti - You season 2 & 3, The Haunting of Hill House mini series etc) and the witness (Zlatko Buric - Wonder Man TV series, Wolfs etc). The 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th episodes were directed by Weronika Tofilska who got Emmy nomination for directing first 4 episodes of Baby Reindeer. Meanwhile the 3rd & 4th episodes were directed by Axelle Carolyn and the 5th & 6th by Lisa Brühlmann.

Overall this was an interesting psychological horror thriller which managed to combine the eerie & scary feeling of something bad was about to happen with few jump scare scenes and pretty intelligent twists. It also has a fresh and original feel of the plot with huge credits to the series creator & showrunner for bringing this to audience. I understand critics were also impressed by the series and we will know more if it's going to be well received by audience in the coming weeks. For me despite the less than 100% satisfying conclusion and the part where it could have been shorter, I did quite enjoy the series. So if you are interested in something like this, then you are welcome to give it a try. But if your preference is a more standard horror show full of supernatural horrifying images and constant intensity, then this would not be for you. The choice is yours.
