On Wednesday, there was a new movie playing in Cinema 21 chain which was about heist of antique sports car. Sound interesting right? So despite not seeing it in the list of summer blockbuster movie of 2017, I decided that it would be nice to see this one in the theater. I was unable to watch this one on the premiere date and I was not even sure if I can make it yesterday due to the heavy traffic. But it turned out that it was lighter than usual and I arrived quite in time to buy the ticket, have some dinner and see the 7.15 PM show. This time my wife was not able to accompany me as she had food tasting event. Now let us get on with the movie.
Brief Story Line
Andrew Foster (Scott Eastwood - The Fate of the Furious, Suicide Squad etc) and his half brother Garret (Freddie Thorpe - The Head Hunter) were a pair of professional car thieves. They were quite notorious for stealing exotic antique cars all across Europe. One day they managed to steal a classic 1937 Bugatti sedan through quite awesome stunts in the roads of France. Andrew had a girlfriend named Stephanie (Ana de Armas - Knock Knock, Hands of Stone etc) who seemed to be always worried about Andrew's job.
A local crime lord named Jacomo Morrier (Simon Abkarian) through some major convincing was interested in using the service of Foster brothers to steal a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO from Jacob's archenemy Max Klemp (Clemens Schick - Point Break 2015 version, Casino Royale etc). It would be a very dangerous thing for the Fosters to do especially since Klemp had a sadistic approach in dealing with people he distrust and they were also given only 1 week to pull it off. Not to mention Klemp's place was heavily guarded and had great security system.
Due to this short period of time, they needed few local people urgently. So Stephanie enlisted the help from her friend named Devin (Gaia Weiss - The Legend of Hercules, Vikings TV series etc). Things also become very complicated when two Interpol agents were apparently hot on the Fosters trail.
So could Andrew and Garret really do the almost impossible task? Find them all in this quite exciting car chase action thriller movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Yes the story of this movie was not too complicated. There were the occasional twists and surprises which if you have seen a lot of this type of movies, you might be able to spot it early or at least in the middle. As expected from this kind of movie, it was filled with exotic car chases and lots of loud heart thumping music. But please do not compare this one with a Fast and Furious series (especially from the 4th and beyond) where the car chases were ridiculously amazing and the fight sequences were awesome. This is a French movie with obviously lesser budget, but it did not make the effects become very bad. In fact I think the car chases and the explosions effects were very good.
Apart from those car chases, the movie also had some of those surprising twists that I think the director/writers wanted to put to give the story more attractive. I think this movie also aimed more towards the male viewers especially with the focus of those exotic antique sports cars and the action. It did not have soapy dramatic moments. This is pure adrenaline pumping kind of movie, though not to the summer Hollywood blockbuster movies.
What I liked about this movie was that it delivered something that you would expected. Nothing less but nothing more either. It is an adequate action movie, with some brief funny moments especially the relationship between reckless Garret and the more mature Andrew. The performance of Simon Abkarian and Clemens Schick as major crime lords were pretty good especially for Simon. The ladies here felt more like just giving eye candy performances rather than important characters to my opinion. Scott Eastwood was OK becoming the lead character (btw I never realized how similar he looked like his father Clint Eastwood until I saw him in this movie).
Overall, I actually pretty enjoyed this movie. It was just what I needed on a tiring night after working to relax, listen to the good music and sound effect and looking at those exotic sport cars circling the beautiful city of Marseille, France. In order to be able to enjoy this movie, you should not be having very high expectations and just sit back and do not over analyze this.
Happy watching!
