Brief Story Line
Set 7 years after the events of the Bumblebee movie, the Autobots including their leader Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen), Mirage (Pete Davidson - Marmaduke etc), Arcee (Liza Koshy - Freakish TV series etc) and Bumblebee himself were left stranded on earth and looking for way home to Cybertron. Once they found out there was a key to do so, they gathered and try to locate them. However, they had no choice but to ask the help from Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos - In the Heights etc), an ex military who was somehow caught up in the mission and unexpectedly met an intern at a museum named Elena (Dominique Fishback - Judas and the Black Messiah etc).
Unfortunately though, another group of powerful Transformers called the Terrorcons led by Scourge (Peter Dinklage - I Care a Lot, The Angry Birds Movie 2 etc) who was serving their master Unicron (Colman Domingo - Candyman 2021 remake etc) were trying to get their hands on the key as well. The Autobots were later joined by the Maximals led by Optimus Primal (Ron Perlman - Nightmare Alley, Don't Look Up etc) and assisted by warriors like Airazor (Michelle Yeoh - American Born Chinese TV series, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings etc) and few others to fight and save Earth from Unicron.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Just as expected from the awesome trailer, this movie really had plenty of amazing and spectacular fights (The only downside was the trailer revealed a bit too much on what to expect). My wife and I were totally blown away by some great Transformers fights scenes (few were quite brutal) that led to a very epic fight/war scenes. You could have guessed it with the appearance of new group of transformers called the Maximals that looked a lot like wild animals such as gorilla, falcon, cheetah (called Cheetor voiced by Tongayi Chirisa) and rhinoceros (called Rhinox voiced by David Sobolov). And the choosing of Unicron as the very powerful enemy was absolutely brilliant as he was supported by the vicious and ruthless Scourge.
As a movie about robots that can transform and set on earth, obviously humans would have to be involved. This time they were completely different from all the previous Transformers films as we were introduced to Noah and Elena whom I believe were to make this movie felt more relatable, especially when they seemed to have everyday problem like regular people. Although I was not that familiar with the two lead cast, they were suitable enough in their roles. Noah was shown to have younger brother named Kris (Dean Scott Vazquez) who funnily enough looked a lot like the son of one of my wife's best friend. Aside from them, the only other human to have support role was Reek (Tobe Nwigwe) and Noah's mother (Luna Lauren VĂ©lez - Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse etc).
The main attraction would definitely be the Transformers and the wonderful special effects. During the very long closing credits, I did not see the name Industrial Light of Magic who used to do the effects in previous movies. But instead they are now done by Moving Picture Company and Weta FX. And I thought they did a splendid job cause the effects were great and I even felt they look smoother and realistic when they transformed. No wonder the budget for the movie was very huge. Talking about the credits, there was a fun mid end credit scene but no post end credit scene.
The movie's duration was 127 minutes which did not feel too long for us. Even my wife was so absorbed that she lost track of time (she had some screams of excitement and clapped hands few times too). Throughout the film, there were some nice enough songs and the setting in 1990s could be seen through the clothes worn and no mobile phones were used. The sound effects were just perfect in the cinema as the Dolby Atmos system was truly optimized. The voices of Optimus Prime, Optimus Primal, Scourge and Unicron were well done while the rest were OK. Oh, we both somehow only realized that Michelle Yeoh actually voiced Airazor and thought the character suit her.
Before the movie ended, there was a scene which we knew would be quite important, but not until it ended that we finally understood the significance. It would be very interesting if they really did what we thought would be. Btw, I read that this film was planned to be the first of another trilogy. Let's see if it's successful enough. I myself was very entertained by the film as the action sequence was totally cool. It seemed the director Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II etc) like to use slow motion scenes which were nicely put. Though there were few cheesy scenes but in general it did not bother us. I also thought the story was better than the 4th and 5th Transformers (cannot compare with Bumblebee cause that had a different vibe). However, the first Transformers (directed by Michael Bay) was still the best one for me and my wife as that was the movie that convinced me Hollywood would always be able to bring our favorite cartoons to life.
Overall this was a very entertaining action movie. Those looking for fun, absolute blockbuster type of film that showed robots fighting against one another with some truly epic wars, would absolutely love it. With gorgeous visual effects that looked amazing, this would really satisfy fans of the Transformers like me and my wife. So if you are like us, surely you would enjoy this one a lot. But if you are one of those who must have the perfect scenario with deep story and characters development plus the best acting, then this would not be your thing.
