(TV SERIES) The One Season 1 - A Thought Provoking Drama Series based on Best Selling Novel by John Marrs

This new series was released on Netflix few days ago, which quite intrigued me with its premise. To be honest I was a bit doubtful if it was too much drama, but then I read again the brief synopsis which hinted at a mystery. So I started watching this on Sunday and finished it in 1 day time. Well let's get to the good stuff then.

Brief Story Line

Rebecca Webb (Hannah Ware - Aftermath, Hitman: Agent 47 etc) has created a program called The One which has the ability to match a person with his/her one true love by using DNA. She created it together with her partner James (Dimitri Leonidas - Renegades, Riviera TV series etc) and got their investment from Tech mogul Damien Brown (Stephen Campbell Moore - The History Boys etc). Meanwhile a journalist named Mark Bailey (Eric Kofi-Abrefa) who was happily married with his wife Hannah (Lois Chimimba) would have strained relationship due to this DNA "matching".

When a dead body was found in the river, Detective Inspector Kate Saunders (ZoĆ« Tapper) was assigned to investigate the case which would later lead her to The One. It was a bit of a challenge for her as she was struggling with her own personal relationship with her Match.

And so what would happen to all these people whose lives were changed after they found their Match? Find them all in this unique and interesting series.

End of Brief Story Line

This series has a truly unique idea. It made us think of how the world would be if you could find your one true love just by using DNA analysis as the program The One suggested. And amazingly, despite not having the investigation of the death person be the main focus, I could still enjoy this show through the quite captivating story of several of the characters. However, I also felt that this series has a strong psychological thriller sense which would explain the slow pace of story development. Even though I could still tolerate it, I would like it better if the pace was picked up a bit.

As I said there were several persons who had quite captivating story. Rebecca obviously was one of them, especially being the main character with her true love story, plus I think Hannah Ware was quite brilliant in her portrayal of this ambitious woman. But surprisingly the story that truly interest me was between Mark and Hannah because it involved normal people that you would see on your day to day lives. While Kate's story was OK, I personally liked it better when she was involved in the mystery revealing. She was really like the phrase "a dog with a bone" as she would continue finding out the truth no matter what.

For a series that was having only 8 episodes, it did not take too long for me to finish it. Funny thing though, I always had a feeling this was like a limited/mini series. However, as the story progressed and I got to the finale, I realized the series creator (Howard Overman - creator of series like Vexed, Dirk Gently and many others) wanted to make this a longer running one due to its ending which suggested some possible stories they could develop in future seasons (should they choose to renew it). It is also based on the best selling novel of the same title written by John Marrs.

For a drama series with touch of science fiction and a bit of mystery revealing, this one did serve its purpose. But the drama felt so much stronger in the first season and due to its slow pace, some people might not be able to enjoy it. The idea was really great and would definitely be something to be thought which made this a rather heavy series and more suitable for adults (there were few love making scenes but not the vulgar type). I myself did enjoy the series due to its thought provoking idea, though the ending did not feel brilliant and intriguing enough to make me totally excited for a second season. So even if there was no future seasons, I would still be content with it.

Overall I thought this one was quite interesting series. If you are looking for something that make you think plus focusing quite a lot on relationship, then this one should entertain you. But if you were hoping for a lot of mystery solving, then this might not be truly satisfying. The choice is yours.
