Happy Death Day 2U - A More Comedic Sequel to that Fun & Unique Slasher/Time Loop Movie

This was a sequel to the movie that I loved 2 years ago and I was definitely intrigued to see what would be in store for that fun college student who had to relive her birthday. Anyway when the movie was informed to be premiering on this week's Wednesday, my wife and I bought the ticket for the 7.15 PM show at the theater nearest to our home. So let us get down to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Exactly after the events from Happy Death Day, it would appear that the day had reset again for Tree (Jessica Rothe - Forever My Girl, Mary + Jane TV series etc). This time it also involved Ryan (Phi Vu), who was the roommate of Carter (Israel Broussard - Extinction, To All the Boys I've Loved Before etc). Tree tried her best to find out what was the reason for her new time loop and she got the help from Ryan and his two friends Samar (Suraj Sharma - Life of Pi etc) and Dre (Sarah Yarkin).

One thing that was still the same was the appearance of the murderer hiding behind the mask and of course Tree's roommates Lori (Ruby Modine) and Danielle (Rachel Matthews) were still around.

So could Tree break the time loop? And what was the reason for it? Find them all in this fun slasher movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well to be honest, I had a rather mixed feelings about this sequel. It started out surprisingly different from what I expected, but as the movie progressed it turned out to be almost similar with the original movie and gave a sense of familiarity. I really got to hand it to the film makers especially the director/writer Christopher Landon who had written many quite successful low budget movies such as several Paranormal Activities movies, Disturbia and few others, for taking an unexpectedly different approach.

Yes, this movie felt more comedic than the first film. It had several moments that would make us laugh at the craziness of Tree or the comic nature of Ryan, Samar and Dre. And even Danielle also gave us some funny scene as well. But the element of time loop still exists in this film. And I also noticed that the film now focused a lot on the reasons for the time loop event which made the story felt a bit science fiction rather than the combination of comedy/time loop/slasher movie like in the previous one. Now this was the part that I personally felt a bit challenging to enjoy, as it kind of a bit too much.

Apart from the more comedic and sci-fi tone, this film also had a little bit of drama and even got few emotional scene (which did have some impact to my wife). I loved the way we were shown very briefly what happened in the first movie. However, I really think that you should watch the original film before seeing this one to understand & appreciate better the things that were shown in here and how it was somehow connected. And to make the movie more interesting, this time we had a mid end credit scene which likely was a teaser for us in the event there is indeed a third movie to complete a trilogy. Something that obviously the director & producer was thinking of.

The movie was also entertaining because of the performance of the main lead Jessica Rothe as Tree who had to endure the seemingly endless and very tiring time loop. Just like in the original movie, we got to see her having to face death multiple times and the day would reset, plus we were also shown her ability in the more dramatic scenes. The other characters that I found interesting was Ryan (played by Phi Vu) who got a much larger role in here, plus Danielle which was portrayed amazingly by Rachel Matthews.

Overall I thought this film was quite enjoyable. The comedy element was a nice approach, but the sci-fi portion was not really my favorite. The mystery was adequate enough and the time loop was still fun to see, but the slasher was not as much as the original. Those who enjoyed the first movie may also like this one, though must be ready for the different tone. For me personally, I think I enjoyed the original more, but not to say this one was bad. It was just different. And if the box office result is good enough to warrant for a third movie, then we could definitely see a part three which would be interesting on how it would be done. I for one would surely want to see that.

Happy watching!
