(2022) Confession - An Intricate and Captivating Mystery Thriller Movie

As soon as I read the synopsis of this movie that was just released few days ago in certain cinema chains, I was immediately intrigued by the premise. So once my wife and I were available during the weekend, we went to the nearest theater that showed this movie. OK, let's get started then.

Brief Story Line

When Yoo Min-ho  (So Ji-sub - The Battleship Island, Doctor Lawyer TV series etc), a CEO of successful IT company was named as the primary suspect of murder in a close room, he was trying to engage the lawyer who never lose a case, Yang Shin-ae (Kim Yun-jin - Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area TV series, Ode to My Father etc).

In order to convince her to take the case, Min-ho started to confess and shared the information while revealing the connection of other people, including Kim Se-hee (Nana - The Swindlers, Glitch TV series etc).

And so how was the murder happened and how would the story conclude? You can find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

As fans of close room murder mysteries, both of us were obviously excited to see this movie. At first, I was not sure how the story would proceed as I thought it would be an investigation type or some court room drama. But it turned out to be completely different. The story focused on the revealing of what happened through the story shared by the main suspect (likely the reason this movie was given title Confession).

Now the amazing thing about this was how intricate the plot and the many layers of story that unfolded every time we seemed to reach a certain conclusion. The way it was narrated was really awesome and kept us curious of the whole story. There were multiple twists that would please audience who loved them. Although, that first twist was somehow guessed by my wife (another example of how good she is in concluding or at least guessing), and subsequently we were able to conclude one or two other twists. In fact what happened in the final 15 minutes were rather obvious as the hints were not too subtly shown.

However, even with few relatively guessable twists towards the end, the movie was still enjoyable for us. I think the cast did fantastic job in here. So Ji-sub, Park Yun-jin were brilliant while Nana was equally good as well. There were other cast in here such as Choi Kwang-Il (Alchemy of Souls TV series etc) as the good samaritan and Hong Seo-joon (Vincenzo TV series etc) as Min-ho's private lawyer Jang Tae-soo. One of the things that amazed us was the different ways of one incident could have occurred, which made us in awe of the writer and director Yoon Jong-seok in his directorial debut. It even had its premiere in the Friburg International Film Festival back in April 2022. From what I read on the internet, this movie was actually based on a 2016 Spanish film titled The Invisible Guest written & directed by Orio Paulo. I am not able to give comparison as I have not seen that film yet.

Overall my wife and I enjoyed this movie a lot. Even though we might be able to guess few things, but the story telling was brilliantly done that it managed to captivate us throughout the whole movie. It has a duration of 105 minutes which did not feel overly long, and did not have any mid or post end credit scene. Even after the movie finished, we still discussed several things that we were not able to do so in the cinema as it would bother other audience. So if you are interested in this kind of mystery thriller movie, you should be entertained by this. You can give it a try as it is still playing in several theaters.
