Now You See Me: Now You Don't - An Enjoyable Sequel to the Series with Interesting Addition of New Generation of Magicians

Today I finally got the chance to start seeing new movies in the cinema after our holiday. My wife and I decided to have another movie marathon and this was our first option due to the schedule in the cinema very near to our home. All right then, let us get on with it.

Brief Story Line

Ten years after the events of Now You See Me 2, the original four Horsemen that consisted of Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg - Zombieland: Double Tap, The Social Network etc), Merritt (Woody Harrelson - The Man from TorontoVenom: Let There be Carnage etc), Jack (Dave Franco - Nerve, Neighbors etc) and Henley (Isla Fisher -Back to the OutbackKeeping Up with the Joneses etc) were reunited after they got invitation by The Eye. They were joined by three brilliant young magicians, the impressionist Bosco (Dominic Sessa - The Holdovers etc), the pickpocket June (Ariana Greenblatt - Fear Street: Prom Queen65 etc) and the brain behind the scene Charlie (Justice Smith - Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among ThievesDetective Pikachu etc). They were supposed to work together on a heist against owner of large diamond company, Veronika Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike - I Care A Lot, Jack Reacher etc).

During the heist, they had to face a lot of challenges including the authorities who tried to capture them and the things that did not go exactly as planned.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I am a big fan of the original movie back in 2013 but not so much of the sequel even though it was still entertaining. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found out there would be a third film that I could enjoy after the second one was released 9 years ago. Strangely though, I never saw the trailer to this latest installment but since I already knew the genre, it did not really matter to me as I liked to be surprised. And to be honest, despite not remembering the main plot of the first and second film, I thought this one was easy enough to understand as the connections were only on the characters who fortunately were all memorable.

In this film, the gang was joined by new generation of magicians who were amazing. My wife and I thought that the combination of these two groups was a really nice touch. It brought a sense of freshness and their chemistry was a joy to see as well. Those scenes in the French estate where they showed their capabilities were awesome. And just like in previous movies, there were some really cool heist performed with a grand finale in public space which included several interesting plot twists. This time around both of us were not able to deduce the shocking revelation towards the end.

I enjoyed this film as somehow the pace was fast and there was never a dull moment. The magic tricks and illusions were abundant and really entertaining. The directing was pretty good and I think Ruben Fleischer (Uncharted, Zombieland etc) did a nice job here. It got mixed critical receptions but not sure yet about audience views (will know more after the weekend based on its box office performance). The cast were pretty awesome, including the appearance of several characters from previous movies like Thaddeus (Morgan Freeman - The Hitman's Wife's BodyguardAngel Has Fallen etc). Although my wife and I felt that his was the most under utilized one which made him -sorry to say- a rather pointless addition, especially if you see how he was written here. I did like the performance of the young magicians and Rosamund Pike was quite suitable as the main antagonist.

The movie's duration was 112 minutes without mid or post end credit scene. However, the ending did hint a possible sequel (which according to what I read, seemed to be a strong possibility). It was kind of surprising to me as I thought this would be the final one in a trilogy. But I guess the producers have different thing in mind. Even though it was almost 2 hours, the fast pace did not make it felt too long and I had fun watching it. So if you are fan of the film series, I think you are going to like this one too. It still has its charm, the surprising twists, various magic tricks and ilussions and combination of two different generations of magicians. If there really is another sequel, my wife and I would gladly see it.

Happy watching!
