The First Ride - Adventure Comedy Film with Plenty of Comedic Moments and Lots of Heart

When this movie was released last week, my wife and I were still on vacation. Luckily for us, it was still available this week as my wife would really love to see it due to its cast. As there were still other films that we were playing catch up, we had to have another movie marathon and this was the first one. OK let's get on it then.

Brief Story Line

Four young men that consisted of the intelligent Tae-yung (Kang Ha-neul - Wall to WallLove Reset etc), the one supposed to be a monk Geum-bok (Kang Young-seok - Waiting for the Rain, Newtopia TV series etc), Do-jin (Kim Young-kwang -  Mini series TriggerMission: Possible etc) who wanted to be a basketball player and Yeon-min (Cha Eun-woo - Decibel, Wonderful World TV series etc) who aspire to be a DJ, had been wanting to go for a trip together to Thailand.

Unexpectedly Ok-shim (Han Sun-hwa - Pilot, My Sweet Mobster TV series etc), the woman who had a crush on Tae-yung since childhood decided to come along and made the trip became total chaos.

So what would happen on their first ever trip? You could find out on this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

As expected, this movie was full of comedic moments that was resulted from all ridiculous behavior of the characters. But the film did not always started that way. The early part showed how these four guys formed their friendship since 6 years old that was nice to watch. Looking at them through their high school days was very fun and made us feel attached to them. As the story progressed though, we got to see different side of these guys especially after they graduated. However despite it felt a bit more serious then, the funny moments were still quite abundant.

The characters and chemistry were what made this film interesting to see. Both of us felt they were all likable. From the unique "ability" of Geum-bok, the "craziness" of Do-jin, the naivety of Yeon-min, to the seriousness of Tae-yung and with the extra addition of Ok-shim who was so in love with Tae-yung that made her action ridiculous. Aside from them, there were also other support characters who provided more humor like Tae-yung's boss the assemblyman Nam (Choi Gwi-hwa - Project Wolf Hunting, Squid Game season 2 & 3 etc), the guy who picked the friends at the airport Tai Park (Ko Kyu-pil - Twelve mini series. The Roundup: No Way Out etc) and brief appearance of South Korean embassy person (Yoon Kyung-ho - My Daughter is a ZombieRevolver etc).

The movie had a rather long duration of 116 minutes which was able to cover the comedic part and the drama. While my wife and I enjoyed the story telling, we did not give a lot of thoughts on certain issue, which was why we were surprised with that particular moment before the ending. In the end, aside from all those lightness and hilarity, the drama was pretty strong and touching that would make us emotional (my wife was one of the audience who shed tears). Btw, there was a nice mid end credit scene and a brief post end credit scene that was just for fun.

This film was a 2025 production and I understand from my wife that it was the first comedic role for Cha Eun-woo & his final appearance before his military service. However both of us still feel that although there were 5 lead characters, the main one was still Kang Ha-neul whose acting capabilities have been proven. It was written and directed by Nam Dae-joong who also directed Love Reset, Homme Fatale etc. I have not read about its critical reception but the box office performance was not extraordinary since its release in South Korea end of October. It was pretty amazing that the movie was available in Indonesia the following week.

Overall this was something that was enjoyable to us with its funny and heartfelt moments plus a wonderful albeit emotional ending. Fans of South Korean dramas would have good time watching this due to its humor and obviously the well known cast, especially those who want to see Cha Eun-woo. So if you are one of them, I think you would enjoy the movie like we did. But if you are a bit picky or not too accustomed with their style of humor, then it might not be too satisfying for you. The choice is yours.
