Hitman: Agent Jun - Entertaining Enough for an Action Comedy Movie

Actually this movie was already released more than a week ago, but as I said in one of my previous posts, I was not really in the mood to go out to theaters during last weekend. This time though, when I saw that it was still playing in several theaters, I asked my wife to accompany me seeing what seemed like a fun action comedy movie, especially since she also knew and quite like the male lead. So here's more on the film.

Brief Story Line

Jun (Kwon Sang-woo - Stairway to Heaven TV series, The Accidental Detective etc) was a former hitman for the South Korean secret agents who had retired and living peacefully with his wife Mi-na (Hwang Woo-seul hye - Crash on Landing on You TV series etc) and young daughter Ga Yeong (Lee Ji-won - Last Scandal TV series etc). His passion was to be a successful webtoon animator, but sadly his works had been terrible.

One day, he drew something about his secret past and somehow it got published & became a huge hit. This made Jun became the target of his previous boss Director Cheon (Jung Joon-ho - Sky Castle TV series etc) who assigned their best agent Chul (Lee Yi-Kyung - Partners for Justice TV series etc) to capture him. To make matters worse, Jun was also being pursued by bad guys from his past.

Now Jun had no choice but to save himself from all the troubles caused by the webtoon.

End of Brief Story Line

This was a movie that was just perfect for refreshing. It had enough comedy to make us laugh and also some nice good old fashion action with cool hand to hand combat and some well taken gun shootout scenes as well. And the action here, even though it showed some people killed, they were not done in a really violent & bloody way that would depress us. But still the film was classified for 17+ in Indonesia.

For an action comedy movie, this one did its job nicely especially on the comedic part. There were countless times my wife and I plus the audience were laughing out loud due to the hilarious situation Jun was in. The idea itself was pretty good whereby a former hitman became a peace loving family man and only wanted to become successful animator. I think Kwon Sang-woo did his job quite well, showing his versatility as an actor with various expressions, not to mention his great fight skills.

Aside from him, the rest of the cast were actually pretty good as well. My wife's favorite was Lee Ji-won as the young daughter who was really amazing in expressing herself (and she also looked a bit like an older version of one of her niece). She managed to make audience felt happy and sad with her acting. There was also one hilarious scene involving Jun's wife Mi-Na during the finale.

Btw despite the movie was an action comedy genre and there were funny moments, but I could not say that it was filled with nonstop humor. There were few times we were shown melodramatic moments which might felt a bit too much, though it did successfully affected my wife. Oh during the closing credit, there was a mid end credit scene that was quite fun.

One thing that I loved about this film was the animated scenes which were well done and enjoyable to see. I was also surprised by the sound system in the cinema which was better than expected. And finally, the fantastic fights scenes was definitely my most favorite part. Now do not expect this to be the best action comedy there is, but I think it has its moments. Personally I thought this movie should be successful commercially, but unfortunately it was released during the time when South Korea was hit by the Covid-19 virus and it seemed to be under-performing a bit. So if you are in the mood for some cool action movie combined with some humor and well animated scenes at certain part, then this should be entertaining for you.
