Life of the Party - A Not too Memorable Melissa McCarthy Drama Comedy

During the flight back home from my holiday trip with my wife, I did not have the time to complete 3 movies, and only managed to see 2 and a half films. One of them was this comedy movie that did not play in Indonesian cinema and starring one of the funniest woman in the US. So without further ado, here are more details of the movie.

Brief Story Line

Deanna (Melissa McCarthy - Ghostbusters remake, Mike & Molly TV series etc) was a simple housewife who had a daughter in her senior year college named Maddie (Molly Gordon). Her life turned upside down when her husband Dan (Matt Walsh - Brigsby Bear, Veep TV series etc) suddenly wanted to divorce her as he was in love with their realtor Marcie (Julie Bowen - Horrible Bosses, Modern Family TV series etc).

In her lowest moment, Deanna decided that she would finish her college education, and continue her final year in the same college as Maddie. Deanna made a lot of new friends in college that included the coma girl Helen (Gillian Jacobs - Hot Tub Time Machine, Community TV series etc), Debbie (Jessie Enis) and Amanda (Adria Arjona - Emerald City TV series etc). She was even a bit romantically involved with a college student Jack (Luke Benward - How to Eat Fried Worms etc).

How would Deanna tackle her life with so many things to adjust as college student and her relationship with her new found friends & her family? Find them all in this quite fun comedy movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When I saw that the movie was having Melissa McCarthy as the lead character, I thought that it would be straight out funny from start to finish. However, when I saw the first one third of the movie, I did not find too many scenes that were funny and entertaining. In fact I thought it was a bit sad and depressing at the earlier part. There were only brief occasional a bit funny scenes, but it was mostly more drama.

Then the story proceed to the college time which should be the part where it was funnier, but then it became a bit standard story. There were the additional sorority girls who became Deanna's friends, but their characters were not truly developed and did not leave too much impression. The character that was fun to see was Deanna's best friend Christine (Maya Rudolph - The Emoji Movie, CHiPs etc). There was 1 very hilarious moment involving her in the middle of the movie which, aside from that scene, the rest of the film did not have too many scenes that could make me laughed as hard as when I saw the other McCarthy movies such as Spy or Ghostbusters

Even though the movie also had few other stars who were accustomed to comedy genre, unfortunately they did not really give impression either. There was even the brief appearance of Chrstina Aguilera which I thought was a bit forced (and predictable). Although once again there was a funny moment which also involved Maya Rudolph during Aguilera's performance.

If I had to sum up this movie, I think that this was more like a drama movie with comedy, rather than a full comedy movie. But the thing is, the drama part was not too dramatic and there was not a moment that felt powerful or touching. It felt a bit flat to my personal opinion. Although there were funny scenes, but not as many as I would hope for. This made the movie felt too little of everything. It did not feel too funny and the drama did not feel too good and memorable.

Overall I did enjoy some of the scenes, but too bad it did not give me the satisfaction of laughing out loud from seeing a comedy movie. So if you are looking for a really funny Melissa McCarthy comedy movie, I would recommend something else. But if you still want to give a try, the movie is currently still playing in Singapore Airlines inflight entertainment. Of course you could always watch it through online streaming.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3 out of 5 stars
