Eenie Meanie - Could Have Been Better Heist Thriller Movie

After some time focusing more on other streaming services, I started browsing Disney+ a couple of days ago and found this movie which was originally released on Hulu. Apparently it had been made available since 22 August so I missed it for more than a week. Although the synopsis was too brief, the thriller genre mentioned on Disney+ was what made me intrigued. Without further ado, here's more on the film.

Brief Story Line

Edie (Samara Weaving - Scream VISnake Eyes: G. I. Joe Origins etc) used to have a dark past since her teenaged years but managed to turn her life around by returning to college and working in a bank. However when her ex boyfriend John (Karl Glusman - Civil War, The Bikeriders etc) made a fatal mistake that hurt the business of major criminal Nico (Andy Garcia - Expendables 4Ghostbusters 2016 remake etc), Edie had no choice but to fulfill his demand of working on a  heist.

In order to coordinate the job, Edie & Nico were assisted by the Chaperone (Jermaine Fowler - Ricky Stanicky, Superior Donuts TV series etc). Things became complicated with the appearance of Perm Walters (Marshawn Lynch - The Pickup, Love Hurts etc) whom they had bad experience with previously.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie had a rather intriguing opening that piqued my interest. Subsequently though it had a different feel and I was not really sure where it was heading. But after the appearance of other cast, it became clearer and quite exciting as they prepared for the heist. Unfortunately though, I felt that the story was giving few teasing scenes that were never properly cleared or closed such as when John played pool in the bar, or the street racing scene and the worst was the opening sequence. So I had to guess for myself how it was resolved or why it was done in the first place. There was also a confusing part about the years experienced by Edie (the math just did not add up). Apparently it was highlighted as goof in IMDB.

Anyway, the heist was just so so for me. However the car chase sequence was quite pleasing albeit a bit too short. The most satisfying part was the ending. It was unexpected but brought a nice conclusion to this 96 minutes movie which had no mid or post end credit scene. The inconsistent pace did make this film less enjoyable as there were brief dark comedic moments but was also tragic and dramatic. The film itself was written and directed by Shawn Simmons (creator of The Continental TV series) in his directorial debut. It seems the movie was getting mixed reception by critics while audience views are not too clear cause it did not have theatrical release and only available via streaming.

The cast in particular Samara Weaving was quite excellent here which was praised by both critics and audience. I also liked Andy Garcia's performance who seemed quite perfect for his role. There were additional support cast as well including Steve Zahn (8-Bit ChristmasWar for the Planet of the Apes etc) as Edie's father, Mike O'Malley (SullySnowpiercer TV series etc) as Nico's right hand man George, Kyanna Simone as Edie's best friend referred to as Baby girl and Randall Park (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Fresh of the Boat TV series etc) who provided humorous moments. Oh and funny thing about Marshawn Lynch cause he appeared in three movies that I saw this year but never before.

In the end, I felt this could have been something good if few little things were addressed properly like those unresolved scenes to give a more coherent story telling and also adding more screen time for the heist. The action sequence, especially those various high speed car chase scenes were pretty entertaining. I also liked the ending which made it worth the watch. So if you are interested in watching a heist movie with some drama, then you could give it a try. As long as you are not bothered by the sudden shift of pace or the improper calculation of those years involved, then you should be fine.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3 out of 5 stars
