The Pickup - A Heist Action Comedy Movie that Lacked the Twist and Suspense & not Enough Eddie Murphy

I found out about this latest movie on Prime Video few days ago prior to its release and thought it looked interesting, plus it has Eddie Murphy starring in it. So when it was made available yesterday, I gave it a try last night. Well how was it then? Let's find out more shall we?

Brief Story Line

Russel (Eddie Murphy - Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Daddy Day Care etc) had been working as armored truck driver for many years and was preparing to retire and do business with his wife Natalie (Eva Longoria - The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Sentinel etc). On the day of their 25th anniversary, unexpectedly Russel was given a task by his superior Clark (Andrew Dice Clay - A Star is Born, Blue Jasmine etc) to accompany overly excited rookie driver Travis (Pete Davidson - Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Meet Cute etc) for a long drive delivering valuable items.

Unfortunately the drive was not as smooth as they expected since a group of people that consisted of Zoe (Keke Palmer - NopeHustlers etc) with her two associates Banner (Jack Kesy - Hellboy: The Crooked ManDeadpool 2 etc) and Miguel (Ismael Cruz Cordova - The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series, Mary Queen of Scots etc) were trying to rob the truck while they were in the dead zone.

So what would happen to Russel and Travis? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well this movie did not exactly start the way I thought as it focused more on Travis instead of Russel which was not really what I expected as I was hoping to see more of Eddie Murphy doing all his usual comedic traits. In this movie unfortunately he was given a bit less time to show his capabilities as the comedic side was given more towards his co-star Pete Davidson. No offense to him but I think he was a bit pale in comparison to Murphy as I found him to be not that funny. Not sure if it was because of the way his character was written cause I understand he is a pretty successful comedian who had starred in Saturday Night Life comedy sketches for many years.

Anyway as the story progressed, I was pleasantly surprised by the exciting action sequence during the robbery. Which was why I was a bit confused by the sudden change of direction in the middle. It was probably my own mistake for thinking wrongly about the heist (yes it was classified under heist action comedy movie). Now although the second half seemed interesting but I felt it was not that fun compared to the earlier part. Luckily after a while the movie became more entertaining especially towards the final part cause the action sequence was pretty well done. It has a very predictable ending without any twist that was common in other heist movie. So in this area, the film did not really excel.

For an action comedy movie, this was very mediocre in term of the humor as I did not laugh or even chuckled/smiled a single time. The action was the only plus point in the film to my opinion cause the heist was not that interesting and lacked the element of suspense. I actually liked the first half of this movie but not really on the second half. The film itself was directed by Tim Story who was famous for directing Ride Along movies and the 2005 Fantastic Four film with its sequel. It was based on screenplay by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows whose prior experience was more on TV series Gentleman Lobsters.

Overall this was an OK action film though it lacked on the comedy part. The Eddie Murphy factor was not really felt here with the focus more on Pete Davidson, while the supposed heist was not that enjoyable as it did not provide any surprising twists, though the action was still pretty entertaining. At least the first half was quite intense with some pretty well executed stunts that were shown again during the climax. So if you are looking for high level heist movie or a more exciting action comedy film, then this will not satisfy you, especially if you are also looking for some fun watching Eddie Murphy. However if you are major fan of Pete Davidson, then probably you would be happy seeing him in here.
