Nobody 2 - Enjoyable Sequel to the Entertaining 2021 Action Comedy Movie

I noticed about this movie for quite some time already and was very interested in seeing it due to few reasons. My wife and I wanted to do it during the early days of its release but sadly the film did not play in any of our favorite studios near our home. So we had to wait till the weekend to go and see in one of the remaining cinemas that were still playing it. All right then, let us get on with it.

Brief Story Line

Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk - Long Shot, Better Call Saul TV series etc), the former assassin for US government had to continue working to pay off his debt. Due to his continuous time at "work", Hutch was getting distant with his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen - Gladiator IIWonder Woman etc) and his children Brady (Gage Munroe - Paw Patrol TV series etc) and Sammy (Paisley Cadorath). So he decided to take family vacation to the small town of Plummerville together with his father David (Christopher Lloyd -  Back to the Future trilogy, Taxi TV series etc).

Unfortunately their vacation was disrupted when the children got into altercation with local people that brought Hutch to the attention of local Sheriff Abel (Colin Hanks - Orange County, King Kong 2005 version etc) and Plummerville's theme park owner Wyatt (John Ortiz - Bad Monkey TV series, Kong: Skull Island etc). Things gotten complicated as apparently Wyatt was working for the very ruthless crime boss Lendina (Sharon Stone - Basic Instinct, Casino etc).

So what would happen to Hutch? And how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I said above that I was very interested in watching the movie cause it was the sequel of a very good action film back in the year 2021 titled Nobody. I remembered that it had a very interesting story and the action sequence was awesome. But we did not get the chance to see it in the cinema as it was during Covid time and ended up watching it sometime later via streaming somewhere. Anyway I was more intrigued when I found out this sequel would be directed by Indonesian guy Timo Tjahjanto whose past works included various hyper violent action movies like The Shadow Strays or The Night Comes for Us and few others which should translate to nicely done action.

And it turned out to be entertaining as expected. Obviously it was not as ultra violent as those movies as this is an action comedy despite its R rating. However the action sequence was still very enjoyable. My admiration for Timo grew further as he managed to keep the essence from the original film like the sequence of story telling, the use of multiple pop songs during action scenes and the comedic element while combining with his preferred action style. I think it was helped by having the same writer Derek Kolstad (who was also the creator of John Wick) together with Aaron Rabin. It's amazing Kolstad could create two very interesting characters for movies.

It was also pretty nice to see plenty of the cast reprised their roles from the first film including RZA (Minions: The Rise of Gru, G.I. Joe: Retaliation etc) as Hutch's adopted brother Harry and Colin Salmon (Krypton TV series, Resident Evil movies etc) as Hutch's handler with code name Barber. Bob Odenkirk was obviously the star of this movie, but Connie Nielsen was getting larger role and proved that my wife's feeling was quite spot on. Christopher Lloyd added a bit of humor here while Sharon Stone was quite suitable as the crazy crime boss. However the one that caught my attention was Colin Hanks who managed to convincingly portray such an annoying character.

This movie only had 89 minutes duration including closing credits but without any mid or post end credit scene, unlike the original movie. My wife and I hoped there would be a third film cause the story could certainly be explored further. However it would certainly depend on its box office performance which I am not too sure at the moment. Its relatively small budget should help making it less difficult to achieve success. Too bad it's not making a splash in Indonesia now as there are a lot of competition particularly domestic titles. Perhaps the cinema chains should promote more about the fact it's directed by Indonesian.

Anyway this was an entertaining action comedy movie that my wife and I enjoyed a lot. The story was not complicated combined with light humor but most importantly it got nice good old action scenes that did not rely on CGI. Just plain hand to hand combat with gun fights and lots of explosions using practical effects. For Indonesians, I think you would be proud with the fact that Timo managed to direct a Hollywood film that was quite well received by critics (77 Rotten Tomatoes rating), something that even some well known directors had difficulty in achieving.  So if you are looking for movie with such attributes, then I think you would enjoy it like my wife and I did. Happy watching.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
