(2025) Pretty Crazy - An Unusual but Sweet and Deeply Moving Romantic Comedy Film

This movie did not seem to get a lot of hype before its release in Indonesia mid of this week. And to make it worse, it was playing not in that many studios despite available in more than one cinema chains. So when my wife and I wanted to see it during the weekend, it was a big challenge for us. Luckily it did play in a the theater not that far from our home, though it was our least favorite cinema chain. OK I'll just get on with it.

Brief Story Line

Gil-gu (Ahn Bo-hyun - My Name TV series, Noryang: Deadly See etc) was a jobless man who was bored with his life. However it started to change when new neighbour Jeong Sun-ji (Im Yoon-ah aka Yoona - Confidential AssignmentKing The Land TV series etc) moved to the unit downstairs with her cousin Jeong Ara (Joo Hyun-young - The Story of Park's Marriage Contract TV series etc) and opened a bakery store near their apartment building.

Gil-gu instantly fell for Sun-ji, but his accidental encounter with her at 2AM in the morning drastically changed his view as she seemed like a completely different person. Although Sun-ji's father Jang-su (Sung Dong-il - Hijack 1971Butterfly TV series etc) provided an explanation on her behaviour, Gil-gu did not trust him completely until he experienced it more than once.

So what was the reason for Sun-ji's distict character and how would he deal with her? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Watching this movie, you need to have a bit of patient at first cause it moved a bit slow in the beginning as it was unclear where it was heading. It started off with standard meet-cute in a rom-com film but later became completely wild due to the different personality of the female lead. Slowly we were able to see what it was all about and the story became more interesting too as the characters started to grow on us.

As the movie progressed, the relationship became more fun to see with a bit of conflict added to give more spice to the story. I liked the way the story developed, particularly in the second half and the best part for me was certainly the ending. It was lovely and deeply moving at the same time yet somehow it was not your standard conclusion for a rom-com movie. It certainly had the desired effect of raising emotions of audience since my wife was really touched by it as she could not hold her tears. The closing scene before the film ended was really nice as well.

I did not see anything the movie was based on during the opening/closing credits and could not find the info on the internet either. So I guess it was really based on the creativity of the writer & director Lee Sang-geun who also directed Yoona's film Exit. The film had duration of 115 minutes which was pretty long for such genre. It seemed to be a 2022 production which was odd how it was only released in 2025. Not sure about its overall box office performance yet as it was only made available in South Korea on August 13 while Indonesia had its release the following week.

The cast was quite good in their roles with Ahn Bo-hyun able to perform his part nicely while Yoona was pretty amazing in portraying her character. Sung Dong-il as usual provided some comical moments. In addition to the only 4 lead cast, there were also appearance of Go Geon-han (My Bossy Girl, Nothing Uncovered TV series etc) as Gil-su's best friend Hee-bum and Shin Hyun-soo (Duty After School TV series etc) as the priest. I also like the musical score here mainly during the emotional moments as they were able to enhance the mood. Oh I was also grateful that the CGV studio we saw this was better than our previous experience as the screen was bright and the sound effect was not bad. It's good cause otherwise it would be a bit embarassing, since one of the location of the film was in CGV studio in South Korea.

Overall this was a different kind of romantic comedy movie. The romance was unusual but it got an emotional depth to it. You know everytime you start watching a rom-com you could immediatly guess how it would end? This was not one of those. However, even if you prefer the standard romantic-comedy, I believe this would still be a worthwhile experience to give a try, especially if you are into something fresh and different. You would likely be able to enjoy it like we did.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
