Teen Titans Go! To the Movies - A Hilarious Animated Movie of DC Younger Superheroes

I saw the trailer to this movie few weeks ago and thought it looked like fun. So when I got the chance to see this film on its premiere date and as it happened to play in the cinema very near to my home, my wife and I were very happy and immediately bought the tickets for 7 PM show. It was the perfect time to see it as I would be able to return back from office with plenty of time to have dinner and walk to the cinema. So let us get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Story was set in Jump City where a group of young superheroes who called themselves Teen Titans led by Robin (Scott Menville) and his friends Cyborg (Khary Payton - The Walking Dead TV series etc), Starfire (Hynden Walch), Raven (Tara Strong - My Little Pony: The Movie etc) and Beast Boy (Greg Cipes) were trying to fight crimes but they were always fooling around and were never treated seriously by the more established superheroes, especially by Justice League.

Robin & friends later found out from Superman (Nicolas Cage - 211, National Treasure etc) that a newest Batman movie was about to be shown and the Titans were eager to join the premiere despite having no invitation. They were all feeling irritated that The Titans were not having their own movie. Later they found out from the famous director Jade Wilson (Kristen Bell - Bad Moms & its sequel, CHiPs etc) that the reason there was no movie about Teen Titans was not only they seemed to be considered as jokes, they did not have any arch-nemesis at all.

When a supervillain called Slade (Will Arnett - The LEGO Batman Movie, Show Dogs etc) appeared with his villainous plan, Robin felt it would be the best chance for him and the Titans to have their own arch-nemesis and ultimately had their own movie. So could they succeed in doing so? Find them all in this hilariously amusing animated movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I got to admit that this movie was unlike any superhero movie I had ever seen. I knew about Teen Titans animated series playing in one of the cable TV channel but I never saw a complete episode at all, just glimpses of it. So I thought it would be just like the normal superheroes series. But it turned out that this one was a totally youthful, not serious & full of jokes (even teasing & making fun of other DC superheroes like the Justice League and so on). The first fight with Balloon Man already gave a hint of what kind of movie it would be.

In fact during the first half hour, I thought the movie seemed really like it had no purpose or aimless & having no clear story, just five teenaged superheroes goofing around. But as the story progressed, finally we could see a real story behind all those jokes. And gotta say that the story, though could be easily guessed, was indeed quite fun and got few moral messages while the jokes were sometimes crazy and absurd. The making fun parts were hilarious as they not only did it to DC heroes, but sometimes on its competitor. Especially that particular cameo appearance during the scenes in Hollywood that you should not miss out (and surprising to me as well since the person was willing to do this cameo).

The animation itself was not beautiful kind, and the superheroes were very cartoonish. It was different from the Teen Titans series (which I found out from internet were shown since 2003 to 2006). This one was based on Teen Titans Go! (the spinoff series to Teen Titans) which has been playing since 2013 till present. People who came here to see a very greatly animated movie would not be satisfied. It should not be compared to superhero animated movie like Incredibles 2 and its predecessor. I think it had a similar tone of The Lego Batman Movie but with crazier jokes like in South Park TV series (minus the obscene jokes). Before I forgot, the movie duration was quite short (only 84 minutes) which also included few songs sung by the Teen Titans themselves, 1 nice song from Michael Bolton and another 1980s hit from A-Ha. The end credits have 1 mid scene and 1 funny post credit scene.

My personal view of the movie was that it was quite a lot of fun, where my wife and I had some laughs, especially the making fun part. But it may not be suitable for audience looking for serious animated movie or superhero movie or its combination. This one was purely for fun. And I also had a feeling that if you have watched the animated series on TV, you would probably be more appreciative (as you already know what to expect). When my wife and I saw this movie last night, the studio was only half full and few of them were children who did not seem to be able to enjoy it completely. My guess was the film had a more teenagers tone and adults with open mind would probably enjoy it better.

So if you are looking for light hearted, funny, nothing serious animated movie about some DC superheroes making fun of their own heroes (and Marvel's), then look no more as your thirst for those would be quenched by the film. But if you are not looking for those qualities, you may find this one not to your liking. The choice is yours.
