Distorted - An Uninteresting Supposedly High Tech Mystery Thriller Movie

Two days ago when Ant-man and the Wasp premiered in Indonesia, there was another movie that started to be shown as well, albeit not in all cinema chains. I saw its trailer 1 time earlier and thought it seemed like a small budget, maybe interesting thriller movie. Anyway, I decided to see this one yesterday night by myself as I am not sure my wife would have liked it. So let us get on with the movie.

Brief Story Line

Lauren (Christina Ricci - Sleepy Hollow, Casper etc) was a woman who seemed to be suffering from some kind of mental issue. Her husband Russel (Brendan Fletcher - Braven etc) felt that it might be good to move out of their current house to a better place. They decided to try the new apartment which was very modern, luxurious and very safe, with state of the art security.

Lauren befriended with few of the other tenants like Margo (Nicole Anthony) who had a very young child and also with Phillip (Vicellous Shannon - Annapolis etc). There were also other tenants who were introduced to her, including a single rich guy named Tim (Scott Olynek). From the first night they moved in, Lauren felt there were something odd with the apartment like the hissing sound coming off the building's speaker, or the word that flashed out on TV screen and so on. But due to her mental history, Russel could not believe it. Feeling scared and nobody to turn to, Lauren met with a mysterious person (John Cusack - Serendipity, 2012 etc) who seemed to know the reason behind the mystery.

So what was the reason for such peculiarity in the apartment? And who was the mysterious person? Find them all in this mystery thriller movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This was a movie that was exactly what you can expect. From the trailer and the short synopsis, we knew that it would be a mystery movie involving the apartment and Lauren being mentally tormented. And we can also guess that it was focusing on the thrill of finding out what was the reason behind such mystery and how our protagonist Lauren could solve it, while being judged as having mental problem.

The film started off with some kind of disturbing images, then when it moved to the apartment, I do not know why but the apartment view seemed too much like a computer drawing (like I was literally looking at a brochure). The film's pace was slow, apart from 1 jump scare scene, there was no other scene that shocked me. The mystery itself was not too hard to guess. There were few twists during the finale which were not really surprising, but I was not personally satisfied with the part involving John Cusack's character.

The movie duration of less than 1.5 hour was good, cause any longer than that, it would have been too tiring because there was not a lot of thrilling or suspenseful moments that would make the movie interesting. There was not a lot of special effects involved but there were few disturbing scenes which were supposedly the part to affect Lauren. I also felt that none of the characters here really stood out. Christina Ricci, Brendan Fletcher and John Cusack were at least not acting poorly, though same could not be said about the rest of the supporting cast.

In the end this was not a movie that would blow your mind due to its mystery, nor it was scary or suspenseful enough for me personally. I would not recommend this to be seen in the cinema as it would not be money well spent. If you still want to see this one, it would be better if you see it through online media streaming.
