The LEGO Batman Movie - The Other Side of Batman, Like You've Never Seen Before

I had another night of enjoying the premier of new movie yesterday with my wife. It was originally intended for us to see this movie today, but since I was able to finish my meeting earlier than I anticipated and my wife also finished her trying of new places quite fast, we decided to go for the latest show at 9.25 PM at Setiabudi XXI, the cinema nearest to our home. The really funny trailer to the movie was the main reason why we were really interested to see it as soon as we get the chance. Anyway, I won't be writing too much on this part and get on to the important part, i.e the story line. Be warned though that this time around, I am unable to write the brief story line without revealing some of the plots since that trailer only revealed very little information. So for those who prefer to be completely surprised, then you can skip this part and go straight to my views below.

Brief Story Line (warning possible spoiler)

Gotham city was under attack by Joker (Zach Galifianakis - Hangout trilogy, Keeping Up With The Joneses etc) with the help from his sidekick Harley Quinn (Jenny Slate - The Secret Life of PetsZootopia etc) and lots of Batman's enemies such as Two Face, Riddler, Scarecrow, Bane , Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Clayface. Joker was very sure that this time around he would be able to capture Gotham since he got a whole army with him plus a large amount of bomb that were put underground of the city. To Joker's surprise, Batman (Will Arnett - The Nut Job, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows etc) showed to the location of the bomb to fight Joker's army all by himself. As usual, Joker and team were able to escape from Batman as he had to choose to save the city. Joker was very disappointed though, since Batman never considered him as his greatest enemy and ran away with his heart broken.

Batman returned to his home all alone in his Bat cave, reminiscing his time with his parents which caught the attention of his butler/guardian Alfred (Ralph Fiennes - Skyfall, The Grand Budapest Hotel etc) who believed that Batman really need to open up and let people to be close to him. Batman obviously did not care for such thing. Later on, Bruce Wayne who was the alter ego of Batman was invited to the retirement night party of Commissioner Gordon (Héctor Elizondo - The Princess Diaries, Mother's Day etc) where he met an orphan boy who really adored him named Dick Grayson (Michael Cera - Juno, This is the End etc). Dick got himself adopted by Bruce who was distracted by the sight of a beautiful woman.

It was revealed that she was Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson - Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Daredevil TV series etc) who was the daughter of Commissioner Gordon and the one to replace him. She got some bright ideas of how to make Gotham safe without Batman, which obviously made Bruce Wayne mad. During this party, Joker who thought of some great plan after seeing a TV show interviewing Superman (Channing Tatum - 21 and 22 Jump Street, White House Down and many more) about the phantom zone, came to surrender. This shocked everyone including Barbara and Batman. Joker mocked Batman that he would not know what he would do without the Joker.

After the capture of Joker and all the other villains, Gotham city were very safe and Batman was very bored with himself. He was so concentrating with his life as vigilante at night that he never realized Dick was already staying at Bruce manor for 1 week until Alfred showed him. He purposely let Dick inside the Bat cave to have Batman some company. Batman later on used Dick's amazement with Batman stuff to enlist Dick's help in his quest to put Joker away once and for all.

So what was Joker's secret big plan? What was Batman's idea that would involve Dick? Would Batman change his mind of letting people in his life? Would Batman be able to save Gotham city from the biggest threat that he ever faced, including from his own? See them all in this funny comedy adventure movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie had a very high rating everywhere which usually would translate to very good movie. Before I came to the actual conclusion of my views of the movie, I would like to share first what I experienced when I watched it. First the animation. I have watched The Lego Movie previously and I already knew that the characters were pictured using the LEGO playing bricks and the movements are not like the smooth animation of movies from other 3D animated movies from Pixar (Finding Nemo, Toy Story etc) or from Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions etc). But they were cute in their own way.

Now about the comedy, yes there were lots of them. There were many smart one liner jokes and also many scenes involving Batman's interest in "rapping" or his silly face whenever he saw Barbara Gordon. And don't miss on the very funny password for entering the Bat Cave. That was priceless. Even the start and the ending of the movie where it was narrated by Batman were also funny. In addition to those comedy scenes, there were plenty of music/songs in this movie (not sung by the characters but either playing in the background or played through the musical instrument).

The characters in the movie were all DC superheroes or villains plus the very funny surprising villains from other huge hit movies produced by Warner Bros. You would see them in the later part of the movie. I loved how Joker's character seemed to be so attached with Batman, or how Batman was so afraid of letting his guard down, or how Dick was so adoring of Batman plus of course Alfred and Barbara. The story involving these characters were definitely the main attraction of the movie, plus of course the funny jokes.

This movie was certainly safe for kids to see, as there were no bloody thing, no dying characters, even the sound of the shootings were made by the voice of people, like when children are playing shootings with friends. Just like in The Lego Movie, the LEGO bricks were used to create weapon or airship by Batman, to remind us that this movie was not only a Batman movie, but actually superhero movie using LEGO bricks to portray everything including the buildings, vehicles, big sized characters, even explosions.

However, I did find that the movie was moving in a bit of a rush. I am not sure why though. I truly felt that for a supposed comedy movie and also for children, there were parts that were moving too fast and did not gave the chance to relax. And perhaps that rush feeling was also the reason I was not able to capture the touching moments (which my wife did feel in more than 1 scene). But other than the rush feeling, I thought the movie was truly good. Its main moral message of people should not be alone was very clear and not felt like we were being taught.

So in conclusion, this movie was worth to see for all ages. For those who love to play LEGO should love this movie, but for those who do not play them, should still be amazed by the comedy and its story. It's easy enough to understand for kids and good enough for adults to enjoy. If you are not a fan of DC superheroes portrayed as dark characters, then you would definitely love how this film totally showed that DC superheroes and villains can be very humorous as well. Oh before I forget, there is no scene or anything after the end credit scene.

Happy watching!
