Bad Moms - When Moms are Tired Being the Perfect Mothers

I have watched the trailer to this movie few times already and was definitely interested in watching it, but did not get the chance to watch until last weekend. When my wife was finally able to accompany me (as I knew she would not want to missed out on seeing this one), we managed to go and see it in a theater where quite luckily, there was a promotion of Buy 1 Get 1 Free ticket in 1 of the cinema chain in Indonesia. And it was even luckier that it applied for all classes, so we were able to watch it in the VIP type cinema with only 12 coupled reclining seats in the whole theater.

Brief Story Line

A 30 something mother named Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis - Ted, Jupiter Ascending, That 70s Show TV series, etc) was feeling over worked and always late for everything, including going to work and bringing her daughter Jane (Oona Lawrence - Pete's Dragon) and son Dylan (Emjay Anthony - The Divergent Series: Insurgent) to school. Whenever she drove her children to school, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) president, Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate - Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Vacation and many more) always made fun of her with her 2 friends Stacy (Jada Pinkett Smith - the voice of Gloria in Madagascar trilogy, The Matrix Reloaded etc) and Vicky (Annie Mumolo - The Boss). Those 3 were very dominant at school and all the parents were quite scared of particularly Gwendolyn.

After having a very bad day, and drove fast to attend emergency PTA meeting held by Gwendolyn, Amy was very upset when she found out the meeting was about bake sale, so she decided to quit being a good mother and rejected Gwendolyn's appointment to become the bake sale "police". She went to a bar and met & befriended with Carla (Kathryn Hahn - The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Tomorrowland etc) who was a sexually active single mother with her son attending the same school as Amy's children. Meanwhile Kiki (Kristen Bell - Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the voice of Princess Anna in Frozen, Veronica Mars TV series etc) who was a stayhome mother with 4 kids was amazed with Amy and followed her to the bar. The 3 of them felt the very high pressure of being mother nowadays and with so much similarities among them, they easily hit it off and became best friends since that moment.

Amy, started to enjoy her life with Kiki and Carla by hanging out all the time, including going to single's bar to find guy for Amy. After many unsuccessful attempts in finding the right guy, suddenly Amy met with Jessie (Jay Hernandez - World Trade Center, Suicide Squad etc), the very attractive single father whose daughter also went to the same school as Amy's children. Amy also started to spend more time for herself such as enjoying morning coffee, skipping Jane's Mandarin class and went to the spa with her and others.

However, Gwendolyn who felt Amy would create problem in her PTA started to do few things to make Amy's life and especially her daughter's life difficult. Felt upset, Amy would then challenge Gwendolyn in front of other PTA members that she would run for the new president of PTA.

So could Amy win against Gwendolyn for the PTA president position when most of the parents were scared of Gwendolyn? Would Amy's relationship with her children back to normal, since they did not quite approve of Amy's new way of life? Find them all in this hilarious comedy.

End of Brief Story Line

Well to my opinion this movie was really funny. My wife and I and the rest of the audience were laughing and enjoying ourselves. The humor here were very adult ones, so this movie definitely is not suited for teenagers and younger generation (It has a R rating in US and 17+ in Indonesia). So it was a good thing that there were not a single child watching this movie when we saw it.

The movie had a very simple premise. Its main story was about mothers who were too tired of being the perfect moms and they just tried their best to be the best moms they could. There was a nice end credit scene about honoring mother that I think you should not miss it, so please do not leave your seats so fast and just enjoy it. I know my wife sure did love those scenes.

In addition to the various hilarious moments (my most memorable ones were the preparation of Amy to go to the single's bar to "get laid" and when they went to supermarket), the movie also had a lot of nice soundtracks. The songs were quite up to date which included I Love It by Icona Pop, Cake by The Ocean by DNCE, Shut Up and Dance by Walk the moon and few more. Even there was room for a nice older song of I Want to Know What Love is by Foreigner.

Anyway, I think that this film is a fun movie for adults where you can just sit and enjoy the hilarious moments and jokes. For those who are uncomfortable with adult jokes but still want to see the story involving motherhood & friendship,  then perhaps you need to set aside those jokes first to really enjoy the movie. However, if you really cannot take such jokes, then I guess this movie would not suit you.

If you want to see this one in theater in Indonesia, you better hurry coz it had been playing for more than 2 weeks now and only playing in 2 cinema chains. By the time I write this post, I think the promotion for Buy 1 Get 1 Free is still valid, but perhaps only for few more days. So happy watching and hope you enjoy the movie! I know my wife and I certainly did.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
