Blockers - A Nice Enough Drama Comedy

During my trip using Singapore Airlines few days ago with my wife, I watched a movie in the inflight entertainment. Since it was a short trip of around 1 hour 45 minutes, my option was quite limited and after browsing through the various movies, I decided to see this one as it was still quite new and did not play in Indonesian theaters back then. Now we shall go into more details on the film.

Brief Story Line

Julie (Kathryn Newton - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Gary Unmarried TV series etc), Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan - All Out Dysfunktion!) and Sam (Gideon Adlon) were three best friends in high school who were planning to lose their virginity during the prompt night. Julie was the first to have such idea with her boyfriend Austin (Graham Phillips - The Good Wife TV series), while Kayla wanted to do it with her lab partner Connor (Miles Robbins) and Sam who earlier was doubtful about doing so, finally decided to do it with her friend Chad (Jimmy Bellinger).

Things literally fell apart when their plan was somehow found out by Julie's mother Lisa (Leslie Mann - How to be Single, Rio etc) who completely disagree on their plan. Lisa together with the overprotective Kayla's father Mitch (John Cena - FerdinandThe Wall etc) and Sam's father Hunter (Ike Barinholtz - Neighbors, Sisters etc), tried their best to stop their girls' pact of having sex on that prom night.

So what would happen to those three young girls? Could their parents stop them? Find them all in this quite hilarious drama comedy movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie was pretty exact to what I expected. When I read the synopsis, I immediately could picture how things would be hilarious when three parents tried to stop their young daughters from losing their virginity. It was a subject that definitely could hit the spot on parents nowadays, though it might be tough selling this idea to more conservative audience. Which is why I believe the reason for this movie not playing in Indonesian theaters.

Plot of the movie was very simple, but the way the director Kay Cannon made it in her directorial debut, we were able to capture the essence & morality of the story which was for parents to realize when they need to let go and teenagers would be able to make the right choice/decision if they had trusting & responsible relationship with their parents. Throughout the whole movie, there were various funny moments involving the 3 parents effort of getting in the way of their daughters plan. Although few scenes might seem a bit exaggerated (like that scene in the lake house), but mostly still OK and I was able to have few laughs.

The combination of the parents consistent approach to find the location of their daughters plus the sweet ending made the movie quite good to my opinion. It might not be the best parents daughters relationship movie, but it was nice enough. Of all the characters in the movie, my most favorite one would definitely be John Cena who was able to play the over sensitive & over protective father towards her daughter whom he treated just like one of the guys and was really fun to see (that scene in the early part where he found the underwear was priceless). The rest of them were what you could expect from such characters. Oh, there were also some brief and rather absurd performances from Gary Cole (The Brady Bunch Movie, Veep TV series etc) and Gina Gershon (Killer Joe, Face/Off etc) as Austin's very modern parents.

Overall, this movie was a rather sweet drama with a bunch of comedic moments arising from situation that parents might find themselves if they were in the same position. Since I am not a parent myself, I could not say that this would be the normal action people would take, but we can definitely see the fun in it. So if you are looking for a light drama comedy movie then this could be an option for you. You could probably see this through online streaming or perhaps you can watch it if you are flying in Singapore Airlines during this month.

Happy watching!
