Forbidden Fairytale - An Adult Themed Comedy Movie with Interesting Enough Story

Last weekend, my wife and I were interested to see this new South Korean movie which looked fun. However it was not so easy to do since there were only few cinemas showing the film and most of them played at night. Luckily there was one studio that showed this movie at noon and located not that far from our home so we were able to see this as planned. All right then, let's get on with the movie.

Brief Story Line

Dan-bi (Park Ji-hyun - Hidden Face, Flex X Cop TV series etc) was an aspiring children story writer who was just hired to work in Youth Protection Program. To her surprise the job description was not what she expected at all. During her work, she was mentored by her senior Jung-seok (Choi Si-won aka Siwon - Bloodhounds TV series, DNA Lover  TV series etc) who had been working for many years in the same department.

Unfortunately for Dan-bi, she was involved in a small incident which forced her to write adult web novels for the company owned by Mr. Hwang (Sun Dong-il - Hijack 1971Midnight Runners etc). Without experience on writing such theme, Dan-bi was having difficulty in fulfilling her obligation. It also took a toll on her dream of writing children story book.

So what would happen to Dan-bi? And how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When my wife and I read the synopsis of the movie, we understood the reason for it having only limited showing in the evening till late night. Aside from having an adult oriented themed, there were few scenes which hinted sexual intercourse and some blurred nudity. We were both unsure if the blurring were done by the Indonesian censorship body or it was purposely done by the movie maker. Basically it is a film for adults and the age rating of 21+ in Indonesia was truly spot on.

Anyway, the plot in here was quite simple and the comedic moments arise from situation Dan-bi was in due to having to juggle her personal dreams, her main job and her "side" job which was the complete opposite of the others. The story was not difficult to understand and there were obviously some adult oriented humor but not the really raunchy kind. I thought in term of comedy, this one was pretty decent. Btw, the movie was classified under Romance genre by the cinemas and romantic comedy by other websites which I thought might not be too fitting as the romance/rom-com was mostly in the background.

The cast here did nice enough job with Park Ji-hyun's performance singled out as awesome by one of the critics. I never saw her before but my wife is quite familiar with her and she also liked her in previous series. The other two lead cast were OK as well with Sun Dong-il provided his usual comical moments and Si-won also able to match the other two. There were several support characters who gave more color to the movie such as Dan-bi's two best friends Chae-yeong (Hwang Se-on - Behind Every Star TV series etc) and Jeong-hye (Seol Woo-in - Curtain Call TV series etc), Mr. Hwang's competitor EroKing (Park Geon-il - Love is Annoying, But I Hate Being Lonely TV series, Cafe Midnight etc) and few others. The film was directed by Lee Jong-seok (director of The Negotiation and writer of The Himalayas). It was having duration of 109 minutes with 1 amusing mid credit scene but no post end credit scene. Oh this movie was released just a month ago in South Korea, so it was pretty brand new (even if the calendar in some of the scenes showing year 2023).

Overall this was an OK enough adult themed comedy with interesting story. We had fun seeing the movie along with only 3 other people in the studio (not sure if they enjoyed it cause I think only my wife and I who were laughing at certain scenes). It's pretty entertaining if you are fine with the situation comedy and the adult humor jokes. It also have brief emotional scene towards the end that touched my wife and we were quite satisfied with the ending. However if your aim is to see the usual rom-com with standard formula, then this would not be to your preference.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
