Project Power - A Decent Action Movie on People with "Powers"

Few days ago, this movie was released on Netflix and honestly I had no idea what the movie's premise and therefore no intention of watching it. But as it was a long weekend holiday and after finishing last seasons of 2 series I had been following for years, I wanted to watch a feature movie. So I read the synopsis which apparently seemed interesting (with superhero and stuff), and thought I should give it a try. OK let's get on with it now.

Brief Story Line

Set in the New Orleans, a new drug called "Power" was distributed by a person later on revealed as Biggie (Rodrigo Santoro - Reprisal TV series, The 33 etc). This drug was said to give people a special power specific to the person who used it but only lasted for 5 minutes. With the increase of criminal activities done by the people who used Power, a cop from NOPD named Frank Shaver (Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Snowden, The Walk etc) decided he should also use it to level the playing field. He bought them from a small time dealer named Robin (Dominique Fishback - The Deuce TV series etc) who was also a struggling high school student.

Meanwhile a mysterious person called Major (Jamie Foxx - Robin HoodSleepless etc) was looking to find the person who distributed Power especially Biggie, which ultimately led him to Robin. The police Captain Crane (Courtney B. Vance - The Mummy 2017 version etc) also assigned Frank to capture Major at all cost since he was said to be the main person responsible for Power.

So how would the story conclude and what would happen to Robin who had her own reason for dealing Power? Find them all in this action movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I watched this film without expecting anything and so when the early part was shown, I had a sense this would be like a B movie and thought it would not be entertaining. But as the story progressed and when the special power was shown on a person who used the drug, I thought the action and special effects were surprisingly good. So I continued watching it with greater expectation. And good thing it did not disappoint me at least in term of actions, plus the thrill of seeing what power would the people have once they use the drug.

The story itself was not difficult to predict and understand. The characters were pretty standard to my opinion, although I got to say that Dominique Fishback performed her role perfectly. I have to agree to critics who praised her performance here. Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt played their part pretty decent while the action sequence involving them were quite well done. Though the actions might not be a lot but it was pretty exciting to watch with the finale awesomely crafted. From what I read on the internet, the movie's budget was quite high which would probably explain why the special effects were of the high quality.

The movie's tone was mostly dark with some light and fresh scenes when Robin was involved. Oh there was also a bit of fun seeing Levitt trying to impersonate a famous person. Btw, in the closing credit it was mentioned that Robin's lyrics and original song by rapper Chika which I think included the song My Power. Plenty of hip hop songs were played in the movie here too that should be fun for audience who loved them. Oh there was no mid or post end credit scene in here.

Other than the 3 main cast, there were also few more people involved such as Colson Baker aka rapper Machine Gun Kelly (Viral, The Dirt etc), Amy Landecker (Transparent TV series etc) and several others. The movie had a duration of 1 hour 53 minutes which was not overly long and boring. I did not see anything mentioning the movie was based on something. So I guess it was quite creative of the movie makers.

Overall this was not as bad as I worried but not as wonderful as other similar movies either. It was pretty entertaining in term of action and having good special effects certainly added to the fun part. It was an OK movie to enjoy as long as we do not expect something spectacular. The premise of having power only for 5 minutes were pretty exciting and creative, though personally this one would not be a movie that would last long in my memory. So if you are looking for something like this, then you could give it a try. It's available on Netflix.
