Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway - Funnier Sequel to the Adorable Mischievous Rabbits from the Popular Children's Books

After seeing the trailer to this movie, I was kind of looking forward to see it as it promised some good laughs and we did enjoy ourselves with the first movie. Yesterday it was released in limited theaters, so it was a bit of a challenge to see it. But we managed to finally do so. So here's more of the movie.

Brief Story Line

After the events of First movie, Bea (Rose Byrne - Instant Family, I Am Mother etc) and Thomas (Domhnall Gleeson - Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Anna Karenina etc) were getting married. Peter (James Corden - SmallfootTrolls World Tour etc) with his cousin Benjamin (Colin Moody) and his sisters Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki - The Great Gatsby etc), Flopsy (Margot Robbie - The Suicide SquadFocus etc) and Cotton Tail (Aimee Horne) were feeling happy for them.

However, when a successful publisher named Nigel Basil-Jones (David Oyelowo - Chaos Walking, The Butler etc) wanted to make Peter Rabbit's books into commercial success by changing their characteristics, things gotten a bit out of hand. Especially for Peter who was feeling down and ended up being friends with a mischievous older rabbit named Barnabas (Lennie James - The Walking Dead TV series etc). With his bad influence,  Barnabas managed to drag Peter into something that would turn his family's happy lives in turmoil.

So what would happen to Peter and his family? You could find them all in this funny movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Now this movie was unexpectedly a lot funnier than the original one for me. It had many moments where we would laugh out loud due to various mischiefs done by Peter and his family. It also seemed that Thomas was given more time to excel in several hilarious scenes than before. In addition to the rabbits and Thomas, there were more characters in here who provided more color and humor.

Behind the ridiculousness of these funny animals though, I felt there was a bit of seriousness that would effect Peter. However, in the end his habit of doing things without properly thinking would always be there. What made me and my wife liked this movie a lot was because we wanted to have silly fun and we got it in here. For almost 1.5 hour we were just enjoying ourselves. Btw, there was one quite funny mid end credit scene but no post end credit scene. There was also few brief fun animations during the closing credits.

Some of the characters who were shown in the first movie reappeared here such as the hedgehog Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle (singer Sia), Tommy Brock (Sam Neill - The Commuter etc) and few others, including my wife's favorite Felix D'eer (Matt Villa). Meanwhile the new characters who were friends of Barnabas were Tom Kitten (Damon Herriman - Justified TV series etc), Mittens (Hayley Atwell - Christopher Robin etc) and Samuel Whiskers (Rupert Degas) who were all characters from Beatrix Potter's other children's books (aside from the obvious The Tale of Peter Rabbit). Funnily enough, Barnabas was not a character from those books and created especially for this sequel.

Aside from the many slapstick humor and the craziness we could enjoy of Peter Rabbit and the rest, the songs in here were mostly nice to hear. There was even a funny moment involving the song that was heard during Peter's down moment. The special effects were awesome with the animals all look lifelike. The humans interaction was fun to see as well, with David Oyelowo who surprised me as he was able to play in a comedy movie as I have only seen him in serious roles.

Overall this is definitely a fun movie for the whole family. Children would surely love to see some cute animals running around making chaos and adults could enjoy themselves too like we did. Only thing that I thought a bit missing was there did not seem to be any touching moment here as it focused more on the comedic side. So if you are in search of something that you could do together as a family, then you could give it a try, especially if you like the original movie. But if you are not fans of such genre or slapstick humor, then you might not be able to enjoy this. The choice is yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
