(Special Screening) Till We Meet Again - Unique Love Story with Strong Chinese Mythology Background

It has been quite a long time since my wife and I went to Special Screening of upcoming movie in theaters, since we prefer to avoid crowded places during the pandemic. Not that the pandemic is over now, but after experiencing the virus ourselves and getting vaccinated, both of us were not as rigid as before. Anyway, when my wife got the latest invitation to the screening of this movie, we decided to go and see it. After we were introduced to new F&B products specially designed for CGV audience, plus some exciting giveaway time, the movie finally started at almost 7 PM. So how was it? Let us find out more, shall we?

Brief Synopsis

When Allan (Kai Ko - Tiny Times movies, A Choo etc) died and went to the underworld, he was given a choice to reincarnate into an animal or become the God of Love. Through some tough challenges, he finally managed to become one and was partnered with Pinky (Gingle Wang - Detention, Plurality etc).

While matchmaking people using the red strings to earn their rights to reincarnate as person, Allan met with the love of his life Xiao Mi (Vivian Sung - Hello Mr. Billionaire, Memory Eclipse mini series etc) which would prove to be the hardest task he had.

So how would the story conclude? You can find them all in this fantasy romance movie.

End of Brief Synopsis

Yes, the above brief synopsis summarized the main story of this movie. However, the story telling was anything but brief. From the beginning we were thrown into some chaotic situation where we were unclear what the intention was all about. In fact I felt the early part was a bit confusing and mostly weird. But as the story progressed and after a while of going through the madness, we finally understood better, especially after Allan and Pinky finally became the Gods of Love.

Once we got to this point, the movie's tone turned into something brighter, sweet, romantic and full of touching moments. There were so many scenes where our feelings would frequently transform from joy to sad, happy to heartbreak and so on. Surprisingly (or rather I should have known), there was a huge obstacle in the love story which was unlike the typical romance genre. Afterall, the movie was classified as romance and fantasy, so the fantasy element was very strong (mostly taken from the Chinese mythology).

The movie's duration was quite long with 2 hours and 8 minutes. It has an ending that was nice but somehow it did not really satisfy me and my wife as it raised some questions for us. However, there was a mid end credit scene which definitely should not be missed as I believe that it provided the more satisfying and beautiful conclusion. What I also liked about the movie was the lovely background music during certain moments. One especially lovely song was heard during the final scene which after searching on the internet, I found it to be sung by Taiwanese singer Weibird titled Red Scarf.

The main cast of this movie were generally perfect in their roles. Kai Ko was really suitable as the lead character and his chemistry with his partner Pinky looked real (Gingle Wang performance was spot on). But it was Allan's love & relationship with Xiao Mi that was real highlight of this film which would make any romance movie lovers melt in their hearts (my wife was certainly one of those who was emotional in some of the scenes). I have never seen any of these three lead stars before, but looking at their portfolio, I might check on their past works soon.

This film was written and directed by Giddens Ko whose prior work included the highly regarded You Are the Apple of My Life which was nominated and won several awards back in 2011. It also starred Kai Ko who was awarded as the best newcomer then. Btw, Till We Meet Again's original title in Mandarin was Yue Lao which was the God of Marriage and Love. Probably the English title was more representative for international audience. The great thing that Giddens did was his ability to use the seemingly minor and unrelated details in the beginning which would only make sense at latter stage and made me in awe after having such revelations.

Overall, I loved this movie because of its unique take on romance, the nice chemistry among the cast and its cool directing. It was full of heart warming and few heart breaking moments with some amusing scenes here and there (although some might feel the humor might not be to their taste). The film was categorized for 17+ by Indonesian censorship body, likely due to some sexual references and also few horrifying images that might scare audience. So if you are a hopeful romantic and you love romance movie combined with a bit of twisted and cringe humor plus bit of horror & having strong Chinese mythology element, then you will enjoy this film. It might take a while but in the end it was a rewarding journey. Till We Meet Again would start playing in CGV cinemas on 12 January 2022.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
