Brief Story Line
Seon-joo (Cho Yeo-jeong - Parasite. My Daughter is a Zombie etc) was a senior journalist who had been in a bit of a slump in her career, especially after her previous failed big scoop. So when she was invited to interview a man later on revealed to be Yeong-hoon (Jung Sung-il - Uprising, Unmasked TV series etc) who claimed to be serial killer, she was curious to find out if there was any truth in it.
Seon-joo went to the hotel to meet the person, accompanied by her partner Sang-woo (Kim Tae-han - I Like an Erotic Woman, The King of Tears, Lee Bang-won TV series etc) who sat in different room to protect her. As Seon-joo started the interview, she would soon realize that it would be the biggest thing she ever encountered and would have a big impact in her life.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
From glimpses of scenes shown in the trailer plus the brief synopsis, I could foresee that this movie would be a slow burn psychological thriller drama which was indeed the case as it focused on the conversation between the interviewer Seon-joo and the serial killer Yeong-hoon. It was quite interesting to see the development of the story as it progressed which made me and my wife curious as well how it would continue. Through out the long dialogues between these two people, combined with some occassional scenes involving Sang-woo, we were kept on guessing on what the intention of the killer was and how it would end.
During the interview, if you are observant enough, you would be able to deduce certain things like my wife and I did, although she was better at concluding than I was. As the movie continued, things became more interesting in the final third as the stakes were higher and a surprising twist was revealed. Although both of us were able to guess one thing, but we did not predict a fact related to the shocking truth. Both of us were satisfied with the ending and thought it was a good one. I myself thought there was a bit of familiar feel like when I saw that really amazing thriller Seven starring Brad Pitt, though not as awesome as that one.
The movie only had 3 lead cast with very limited appearances of other in minor capacity. While Cho Yeo-jong was quite good in portraying the journalist, but I thought Jung Sung-il performed very well as he was convincing in his role as the undetected serial killer. I think it was also supported by the good work of the writer/director Cho Young-jun (Midnight Sun, The Preparation etc) who managed to keep us on our toes till the very end. The movie had duration of 107 minutes but no mid or post end credit scene. I tried to find out more on this film but there was very little info and it did not seem to make a splash at the box office, even in South Korea itself when it was released there on 5 September. Yesterday we only saw it with 5 other people and the total studios showing it in Indonesia was not that many.
Overall this was a pretty entertaining psychological thriller drama. The focus was finding out what actually was the intention of the killer by asking for interview with an experienced journalist. As it was full of conversation in small space and very little exciting action, it might not be a popular topic for general audience. For me and my wife though, we were entertained by the film and we liked the shocking twist. So if you are interested in seeing this kind of film, just make yourself ready and pay attention to it as you might missed certain things if you lose concentration like I did several times.
