Brief Story Line
After the events of the series finale, Jack Ryan (John Krasinski -Fountain of Youth, DC League of Super Pets etc) had stopped working for the CIA and working in Wall Street. But when his former boss Deputy Director Jim Greer (Wendell Pierce - Superman 2025, The Wire TV series etc) asked for his help to retrieve some package in Dubai, Jack could not resist. Accompanied by Mike November (Michael Kelly - The Penguin mini series, Viral etc), Jack finally met with the person.
Unfortunately what seemed to be a simple job became an international incident when some assassins were involved. Apparently they were part of terrorist group led by former black ops soldier Liam Crown (Max Beesley - Hijack TV series, Pawn etc). With the help from MI6 agent Emma Marlow (Sienna Miller - 21 Bridges, Anatomy of a Scandal etc) who was also interested in the package, Jack had to race against time to stop Liam's plan.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well that was one awesome action-packed movie. I remember I had great time watching all 4 seasons of Jack Ryan series so it was definitely no brainer for me to see the film which reunited the 3 main characters of Jack, Jim and Mike who had worked so well together previously (though Mike only appeared from season 2). Anyway this film started off with standard opening with a little bit of light moments. But once things gotten big in Dubai, the film became thrilling all the way till finished with some truly well done action sequence.
However, due to its really fast pace and not too long duration, I did feel the story was less developed compared to the series. This would explain its poor critical reception though I think audience were still entertained which should not come as a surprise since for an action film, this one really delivered with its explosive action and multiple gun fights at various locations (amazing scenes in the streets of London and that wonderful finale). I think the director Andrew Bernstein did pretty good job in ensuring this to be a joy to watch for action fans. Bernstein previously was assistant director of movies like 12 Monkeys, Batman & Robin and also directed episodes of TV series including IT: Welcome to Derry, Jack Ryan and plenty others. This marked his feature film directorial debut. The movie itself was written by Aaron Rabin (Nobody 2 etc) with John Krasinsky and Noah Oppenheim (A House of Dynamite etc).
Aside from the three main characters above, there was also appearance of Betty Gabriel (Clickbait mini series, Novocaine etc) reprising her role as CIA director Elizabeth Wright. Additional cast included JJ Feild (The Peripheral TV series, Telstar etc) as Deputy Chief of MI6 Andrew Spears, Douglas Hodge (Legends TV series, Gemini Man etc) as senior MI6 officer Nigel Cooke and few others in minor capacity. Btw, I also said above that the film did not have long duration. It was having 107 minutes which already included closing credits but without any mid or post end credit scene.
Overall this movie was enjoyable if you like explosive actions with high thrill and also fast paced story telling. If you want to watch this one, it would have been better if you have watched the series first so you would have better context, although you could still be entertained without doing so if you are not concerned on the back story of Jack. The story itself was not so greatly written especially if you compare to the series which have longer time to explore more on the characters/back story and providing more of Jack's great analytical ability. So if your preference is a more complex Jack Ryan film with more drama and greater characters development, then this one might not be satisfying. But if you are like me and enjoy watching action thriller movie with high quality action sequence, then I think you would have fun like I did. The choice is yours.
Mike's movie moments rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
