Enola Holmes 2 - A More Enjoyable Sequel than its Already Interesting Original Film

As I pretty much enjoyed the first movie, this sequel was certainly something that I do not want to miss. Hence when it was released yesterday, I opted to watch this film as soon as I got back home from work. All right, let us get to it then.

Brief Story Line

After the events of the first movie, Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown - Godzilla vs Kong etc) was trying to start her own detective agency. However, it proved to be challenging to get clients as she was considered too young and people comparing with her brother, the famous Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill - Mission: Impossible - Fall Out, The Witcher TV series etc).

Finally though, a young girl named Bess (Serranna Su-Ling Bliss) asked her help to look for her missing older sister Sarah. As Enola did the investigation, she soon found herself to be in the middle of larger case and had to face Inspector Lestrange (Adeel Akhtar - Ali & Ava etc) and his superior Superintendent Grail (David Thewlis - Wonder Woman, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas etc).

So how would the story conclude? You can find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Now for a sequel, this one still managed to capture the essence of what made the original movie interesting, like the delightful performance of Millie Bobby Brown as the fun character Elona Holmes, as well as the comedic approach, the fourth wall and other things. The thing that made me like this movie better was the larger role of Sherlock Holmes in here, but not too big that would take the spot light out of Enola. It was so fun looking at how brilliant Sherlock in deducting certain things way faster than his sister (that Enola's look while looking at the camera was just priceless).

The mystery now was also more complicated and better to my opinion. I think it was because no introduction to the characters were necessary so it did not take too long for the mystery to start. But even though it was more complicated, still it was not as sophisticated as Sherlock's standard mystery as I could still guess it here and there. Nevertheless, it was still enjoyable to watch it.

Aside from the characters I mentioned above, there were few people who reprised their roles such as Louis Partridge (Pistol mini series etc) as Lord Tewkesbury, Susan Wokoma (The Truth Seekers TV series etc) as Edith and Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter movies, The King's Speech etc) as Enola's mother Eudoria Holmes. In addition there were also additional support characters like the son of match factory owners Henry Lyon (David Westhead), treasury minister Charles McIntyre (Tim McMullan), secretary Mira Troy (Sharon Duncan-Brewster - Dune 2021 version etc) and Cicely (Hannah Dodd).

As I have mentioned in my post on the first film, this was based on the young adult books of the same name written by Nancy Springer. From all the 7 books, I did not see any similarities with this movie, unlike the original which was adapted from The Case of Missing Marquees. So it was indeed something new written just for this movie. It also had a bit of historical element which was smartly inserted and showed the intelligence of the writers Jack Thorne (writer of Wonder, The Secret Garden etc) and Harry Bradbeer who was also the director. Oh, Millie Bobby Brown also served as one of the producers.

Overall, this was just as fun as the previous movie, if not more. The light comedy was still strong, and I personally liked the way Sherlock was portrayed by Henry Cavill with obvious caring for his younger sister and his genius. This time the film had a duration of 2 hours 9 minutes which was a bit longer than the original, but there was an intriguing mid end credit scene, likely for the future movies. Yes, I am sure it is only a matter of time before the 3rd or subsequent movies to be produced, especially with it being well received by critics and audiences alike. So if you like the first movie, I think you would like this one even better just like I did.
