Brief Story Line
Kat Boyles (Bryce Dallas Howard - Argylle, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom etc) had been trying to become successful stand up comedian for years but found chances were slim and ended up working as improv coach in small club. When Detective Sergeant Billings (Sean Bean - Knights of the Zodiac, The Lord of the Rings trilogy etc) offerred her to work undercover for low level sting, Kat was interested as it provided some needed cash. However she would require two more people as support, so she enlisted the help from small time actor Marlon Swift (Orlando Bloom - Gran Turismo, Unlocked etc) and Hugh, an IT guy who was trying to improve his social skills.
Obviously things were not so easy as they did not have any proper training and experience. But somehow the trio ended up meeting with drug dealer called Fly (Paddy Considine - The Outsider TV series, Cinderella Man etc) and his trusted person, the ruthless Shosh (Sonoya Mizuno - House of the Dragon TV series, Civil War etc). As stakes got higher, they were later introduced with Fly's boss Metcalfe (Ian McShane - Ballerina, American Gods TV series etc). Unfortunately Detective Inspector Dawes (comedian Ben Ashenden) was also hot on their trails as they were in deep cover with only Billings knew their identities.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well that was fun. When we were first introduced with the three main characters, you could not help to feel sympathy towards them as they struggled with their lives, especially on Hugh who tried so hard to be accepted by his colleagues. But as soon as the sting operation started, it was hilarious looking at their behavior, from Marlon's over committed acting as the muscle, to Hugh's awkwardness and quick thinking Kat that somehow saved their lives. There were plenty of moments where everything almost always fell apart which would endanger their lives, but somehow they survived due to pure luck.
The story moved in a fast pace as the problems they faced seemed to escalate everytime they worked. And it was made better with the additional complications from the other Detective and Kat's best friends. Apart from the absurdness of the situation, there were a bit of action which probably explained the categorization of the movie under action comedy. However I thought it would be better classified as comedy with a bit of action. And the humor was definitely the main attraction.
The main cast did great job to my opinion With Bryce Dallas Howard seemed to be enjoying herself, while I never saw Orlando Bloom playing such character. I was unfamiliar with Nick Mohammed but looking at his credential, it's no wonder he suit the character easily. Other cast included comedian Omid Djalili as Sagar, Leart Dokle as Dawes' assistant and few others. The film was directed by Tom Kingsley (The Darkest Universe, Ghosts TV series etc). It was written by Colin Trevorrow & Derek Connolly (Safety not Guaranteed, Jurassic World etc) together with Ben Ashenden himself & Alexander Owen of comedian group The Pin. So I guess it's no surprise the comedy was quite strong.
The film had duration of 100 minutes. I thought it would have a mid or post end credit scene but apparently there was none. It has a satisfying enough ending for this kind of movie and it could have easily ended up differently. In the end this was something that would please your day, especially after having challenging day at work. There was nothing fancy on the story and no worthwhile spectacular action, but the strength was on the way the characters improvised as they went along. So if you are looking for some fun without over thinking, then this one is just for you. But if you prefer more action with little bit of comedy, then this movie might not be too satisfying. For me, I was quite entertained and was pretty happy to have watched the film.
