(TV SERIES) The Eternaut Season 1 - Entertaining Sci-fi Argentinian Series Based on Highly Popular Comics

I have been wondering about this series for quite some time ever since I read many headline entertainment news praising it. After finishing up some series that I was eager to complete, finally I decided to give this a try on Sunday night. And since it only had 6 episodes, I was able to finish the whole season yesterday during holiday. So how was the series then? Let's find out more shall we?

Brief Story Line

On a hot summer night in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a group of middle-old best friends Juan Pablo (Ricardo Darin - The Secret in Their Eyes, Nine Queens etc), Alfredo "Tano" Favalli (César Troncoso - A Twelve-year Night, Brazilian Western etc), Lucas (Marcelo Subiotto - La Barbarie, Puan etc) and Ruso (Claudio Martinez Bel) were gathering at Tano's house to have their usual Truco game time. They were also accompanied by Ruso's brother in-law Omar (Ariel Staltari). However, the night turned into nightmare when a sudden snow fall shocked all of them including Tano's wife Ana (Andrea Pietra - Socias TV series, Son de Fierro telenovela etc) who first noticed the death of people exposed from the snow.

As they were trying to grasp the terrifying situation, a bike courier named Inga (Orianna Cárdenas) suddenly appeared and ask Tano to be let in which created tension among themselves. Meanwhile Juan was worried about the condition of his ex-wife Elena (Carla Peterson - Animal, Guapas telenovela etc) and their teenage daughter Clara (Mora Fisz) who was separated from them and decided to search for them. With so many uncertain danger, every one had to work together to save themselves and the people they loved.

So what would happen to Juan and his family & friends? And what was the actual reason for the strange phenomenon? You could find out in the series.

End of Brief Story Line

After finishing the first season of this series, I could understand the positive reactions of people and critics alike. I found myself to be fully entertained by the series. Even from the first episode, I could already felt the intensity due to unknown danger that lie behind the strange occurrences (sudden snow fall in summer and death on exposure). However, as soon as I started second episode, I was beginning to feel that this would be a standard post-apocalyptic drama series with focus on the people and how to survive in the new world. But as I continued watching, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the story actually went beyond that formulaic premise and gave us some shocking revelation of the phenomenon. Although the story of the survivors still took center stage, but I was able to enjoy the overall plot.

Aside from the awesome sci-fi element, the series also felt intense and suspenseful. I was amazed by how the threats of these people kept on changing and increasing with a hugely shocking revelation at the end. As I said above, the first season only had 6 episodes which made it easy to complete. And having around 45 minutes or so (except the finale which was > 1 hour) with the strong desire to find out more on the story, it would not come as a shock for people to finish watching in short time. The only thing left now would be the impatience to see the conclusion of this exciting series. I read wonderful news that second and concluding season was already in development. Hopefully it would not take too long for the release.

The cast also did great job in here. Despite not knowing any one of the actors and actresses, I thought their portrayal of the characters were nicely done. I understand that the series was actually based on Argentinian graphic novel serialized as comic strip between 1957-1959 by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López. It was amazing how long it took for a proper adaptation to be done and I felt that Netflix once again proven their value for creative people all around the world. With their huge fund allocated to produce quality series in various countries, subscribers have the opportunity to see this kind of series being made. Btw, the series itself was created, co-written and directed by Bruno Stagnaro who is huge fan of the books.

The series also looked great with its realistic look of Buenos Aires covered with snow and the empty streets filled with dead bodies & empty vehicles. The special effects were pretty good as well for made for TV (streaming) series. As a science fiction series, I thought this one was really enjoyable. The series not only focused on survival story, but it got some action and few surprises that should please fans of such genre. Best of it all of course would be the fact the original material have concluded. Hence there would be no difficulty to finish the story. I just hope it would not be dragged too long. So if you are in the mood for a quality sci-fi series which managed to combine post-apocalyptic survival story with interesting mystery and a bit of mind-bending element, then I believe you would enjoy this series like I did.
