Abominable - A Heart Warming Story of Friendship with Some Breathtaking Beautiful Animations

When this movie was scheduled to be released on last Friday, my wife and I already planned to see it after work. But alas, the movie was only playing in very few theaters and not even those that were located near our home. We finally did get to see it on Saturday night after we saw another film earlier, at a different location. So it took a bit of effort but we thought it would be worth it. Anyway, I should move on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Yi (Chloe Bennet - Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series etc) was a teenager who lived with her mother and grandmother. One night she found a Yeti (mythical creature said to be found in Himalayas) who hid on the roof of her apartment. After finding out the yeti wanted to return to its home in mount Everest, Yi decided to help the creature whom she later called "Everest". Together with her neighbors, the very active Peng (Albert Tsai - Trophy Wife TV series etc) and his cousin Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor), they embarked on a journey to help Everest return to his home.

However, a group of people led by zoologist Doctor Zara (Sarah Paulson - Glass, American Horror Story TV series etc) who was financed by Mr. Burnish (Eddie Izzard - Victoria & Abdul etc) were trying to capture the Yeti to be showed to the whole world.

So what would happen to Yi and friends as well as Everett? Find them all in this fun magical adventure.

End of Brief Story Line

I saw the trailer to this movie few times earlier and I thought this looked like a fun and light hearted movie. And it turned out to be exactly what I pictured. This was indeed a light movie good for family and young children. It has a really nice story and not too complex to understand. The animation was awesomely done and very beautiful especially the China sceneries which looked quite breath taking, like the river or the huge Buddha statue. Combined with some very nice songs (the violin instrumental in particular), made the movie having some really nice moments.

As I said above, the story was not overly complex and would be a treat for the young children. With the very colorful animation, plus the funny Yeti who had magical powers, it certainly would make the people who saw the movie have pleasant feeling. Although as the Yeti was made into such powerful creature, my wife pointed out a valid question why he would require the help from Yi and friends in the first place.

Talking about those 3 friends, they were all fun to see characters. Yi with her own problem had to cope up with Peng whose only things in mind were playing and playing, plus the surprisingly funny Jin being the "shallow" and attention-seeking person which is quite common nowadays. Meanwhile the people who were trying to capture Everest were also fun in their own ways. Basically the voice actors and actresses did their job wonderfully. My wife's favorite was Peng whose voice was perfect as a kid who just wanted to have fun. We loved watching the interaction between him and Everest. Oh, there was also the character of Nai Nai, Yi's grandma (Tsai Chin - The Joy Luck Club etc) who provided few amusing moments too.

Btw, this movie had a duration of around 97 minutes which included the quite long closing credits. It would be good to watch them since they sometimes inserted few animation that was quite funny and beautiful too, right till the very end and also accompanied by nice songs included that violin ballad.  My wife and I had good time and had few laughs as well with the rest of the audience. It also had one or two touching moments.

Overall I thought this one was a good movie perfect for all ages, a real family friendly film with beautiful animation, great voice acting, lovely songs and a heart warming story. It's certainly a good option for kids and adults if you like this kind of genre like my wife and I did. The movie also had a good critical rating, in case that is important factor for you to see a movie.

Happy watching!

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
