My Spy: The Eternal City - Inferior Sequel to the 2020 Spy Action Comedy Movie

When this movie was released on Prime Video few days ago, I was on holiday trip with my wife and did not have the chance to watch it. But I did give this movie a try last night. And so here's more on it.

Brief Story Line

Few years after the events of My Spy, JJ (Dave Bautista - Glass Onion: A Knives Out MysteryHotel Artemis etc) had been living with Sophie (Chloe Coleman - Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Pain Hustlers etc) who was now a teenager and her mother Kate (Lara Babalola). JJ was no longer working as a field agent and instead as analyst together with Bobbi (Kristen Schaal - The Mysterious Benedict Society TV series, The Last Man on Earth TV series etc) and their boss David Kim (Ken Jeong - Wonder ParkBoss Level etc).

When Sophie's school choir was invited to go to Vatican city, JJ offered to become chaperone together with other parents and the Vice Principal Nancy (Anna Faris - The Emoji Movie, Mom comedy series etc). At first he thought it would be normal trip where his biggest trouble would be keeping the students in check, including Sophie's best friend Collin (Taeho K) and her crush Ryan (Billy Barrat - Invasion TV series etc). However things became complicated when the ruthless assassin Crane (Flula Borg - Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin etc) came into the picture and endangering the country.

So what would happen to JJ, Sophie and her friends? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

To be honest, I did not expect this movie to be getting a sequel since it was not that big of hit, especially since it did not get the opportunity to have wide release in theaters due to pandemic few years back. Which was why I was surprised to see this one in the coming soon of Prime Video some time ago. Nevertheless, since I quite enjoyed the first movie, I wanted to give it a try. Sadly though, I did not think this to be an increase in quality. Although there were few funny moments but it was not exactly great.

Dave Bautista still did his best in here and his chemistry with Chloe Coleman was nice to watch. And since Sophie was already teenager, her behavior was pretty standard for her age and mostly related to boys. Ken Jeong was getting more screen time and at least the director Pete Segal (Naked Gun 33+1/3: The Final Insult, Get Smart etc) fully utilized him cause he was given more time to show his usual ridiculous behavior, although Kristen Schaal remained as annoying and not funny as before. There were plenty new cast here too, including Nicola Correia-Damude (Burden of Truth TV series etc) as Agent Christina and Craig Robinson (The Office TV series) as Agent Connely. Btw, Lara Babalola replaced Parisa Fitz-Henly as Sophie's mother.

There were not so much action here but the climax was still entertaining. It was really fun watching all the actions done in streets of Italy and the beautiful scenery of few cities there. Since my wife and I just went to Italy and visited some of the cities last year, it gave me the nostalgic feeling of seeing the Colosseum, Duomo and obviously the lovely Vatican City where the grand St. Peter's Church was filled with so many people. And looked like Chloe Coleman had few trainings as well in order to do few stunts. Obviously Dave Bautista remain as the main attraction for the action part. There was a bit of a twist, but probably easy to guess for people who had seen such genre many times before.

The movie itself had a duration of 112 minutes. Pretty long I think for such a light film. It had some mid end credit scene just for fun but no post end credit scene. As I could have guessed, this one was not appreciated by critics at all, although audience seemed to be more receptive. For me it was so so and OK for filling up the time. But compared to the original, I think this one was less entertaining in term of action and the comedy was not as fun either. We'll just see if STX is willing to greenlight another sequel, and if yes, hopefully it would have better story, action and comedy.

Mike's movie moments rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
