John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum - Fights, Fights and More Fights!

Finally I got the chance to see this movie on its 3rd day in Indonesia. I was unable to see it on its premier date due to office function and I was not keen on seeing this in the small size studio with average sound effects. So last night my wife and I bought the tickets for the 6.20 PM show at Epicentrum which was just nice as it would not be too late at night when the movie finished. Well we shall get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line (warning possible spoiler)

Set exactly after the events in the previous movie, John Wick (Keanu Reeves - Speed, Siberia etc) had become excommunicado and exiled from the league of assassins. A major bounty was put on his head and all the killers in that league wanted to kill him, including a highly skilled assassin Zero (Mark Dacascos - Crying Freeman, Cradle 2 the Grave etc) and his pupils. John had no choice but to seek help from some of his old acquaintances such as a former assassin Sofia (Halle Berry - Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Swordfish etc) and a mysterious Russian lady (Anjelica Huston - The Grifters, The Addams Family etc).

Meanwhile an Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon - Orange is the New Black TV series etc) was assigned to New York to do some investigations on people who assisted John previously, such as Bowery (Laurence Fishburne - Ant-man and the WaspStandoff etc) and the Continental hotel manager Winston (Ian McShane - Hellboy 2019 version, Kungfu Panda etc).

So what would happen to John? Find them all in this almost full action brutal violent movie.

End of Brief Story Line

My goodness, this was one crazy action movie which really quench my thirst for a good old fashion action movie. Just like in its predecessor John Wick Chapter 2 and the original movie, this one was full of amazingly choreographed fight scenes. There were sooo many awesome action sequences of John fighting at many different places in a hand to hand combat using his fists, kicks, guns, swords, knives and basically any other things he could find.

Aside from some overly complicated background story and slower pace in the middle, the rest was having very fast pace with long fight scenes where we could sometimes felt the real intensity. Surprisingly there was even twist that we probably did not realize as my wife and I were too busy feeling the suspense throughout the whole movie. All the fight scenes were fantastic and we really lost count of how many people died in John's hands.

Once again Keanu Reeves showed his amazing fighting skills, a feat hardly possible by most people around his age (he was already > 50 years old). As the titular character, he really suit the role. His performance was really outstanding and he literally kick ass. The way he fought with the ridiculous amount of assassins he had to face were very well done. Oh one person who surprised me was Halle Berry as she seemed to be able to match Keanu Reeves during the fight scenes. And those two dogs (you would know which dogs I was talking about if you had seen the movie) were astounding. My wife was really in awe with them.

To make the film more interesting, this time the movie maker added some people who were believed to be his match. The main enemy was Mark Dacascos, a familiar name in the 90s who was still able to perform wonderful skills. There were also other martial artists with 2 particular names stood out for us and Indonesian audiences, our own Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman (famous for The Raid and its sequel The Raid 2 and few other movies). They even had Indonesian dialogues as well which was a nice touch by the director Chad Stahelski who also directed the previous 2 movies.

My experience seeing this movie was enhanced better due to its great sound effects (despite having the standard Dolby Surround) plus some coolly done special effects. I bet seeing this in IMAX would have been an even greater experience. As a fan of action movie, I was really satisfied with Keanu Reeves' performance and all the action sequences, with my favorites, the chasing in New York city and the nonstop fight in the climax. The ending was something that really teased us for another sequel which would be an even more difficult task to match or surpass. I just hope they would be able to do so.

Overall this was a very entertaining action movie. Something that was really brutal, not for the weak heart and audience had to be ready with the violence in the film. It was R rated in the US and 17+ in Indonesia, so definitely not for children. Even if the movie was having almost the same formula as its 2 previous movies, we still love them and as long as we are not bored yet, why change it, right? Btw, there was no mid or post end credit scene for this 131 minutes movie which did not feel that long due to the almost nonstop actions. If you want to enjoy a violent action movie with Keanu Reeves as the main role, then look no further. Just see this one and be entertained!
