Godzilla II: King of the Monsters - One of the Most Visually Entertaining Monsters Movie I have Ever Seen

I was really looking forward to see this movie since I saw its trailer few weeks ago. However, since there was an office function on its premier date, my wife and I could only see it yesterday during public holiday. We decided to see this at my favorite cinema with Dolby Atmos system not far from our home to enjoy the awesome sound effects. Without further ado, below are more details of the movie.

Brief Story Line

Set five years after the events of the 2014 Godzilla movie, the group of scientists who worked with Monarch, the organization dealing with monsters aka Titans which included Dr Emma Russel (Vera Farmiga - Captive State, Bates Motel TV series etc), Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe - Detective Pikachu, Batman Begins etc), Dr. Vivienne  (Sally Hawkins - The Shape of Water, Blue Jasmine etc), Dr Coleman (Thomas Middleditch - Silicon Valley TV series etc), Dr. Stanton (Bradley Whitford - Get Out, The Darkest Minds etc) and Dr. Chen (Zhang Ziyi - Crouching Tiger, Hidden DragonMemoirs of a Geisha etc) were looking for ways to ensure the Titans could coexist with humans.

However, when an eco-terrorist Alan (Charles Dance - The Imitation Game etc) had other plans relating to the Titans, all hell break loose as one of the biggest & dangerous called Monster Zero was released and wreak havoc in the world. Emma's husband Mark (Kyle Chandler - First Man, Super 8 etc) was asked to help by Monarch and the military, when she and their young daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown - Stranger Things TV series etc) were somehow caught up in the middle of this major catastrophe.

As the world was under threat, the humans had to seek help from Godzilla, the only one strong enough to fight against Monster Zero. So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this suspenseful and very intense monsters movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Wow that was an incredible show of visual effects at its best. The movie was filled with so many of them which were done in such amazing ways that we thought all the monsters were real. This was a movie where we could truly enjoy the suspense and intensity of seeing big, huge monsters fighting in the city full of buildings and skyscrappers. It actually reminded me of some scenes from older Japanese movies where Godzilla fighting against other monsters. However, even if those movies were original, the visual effects of this one was definitely far superior which should not come as a surprise seeing how big the budget was.

Throughout the whole movie, the main focus seemed to be sharing the knowledge there were many more Titans than just Godzilla (and his enemy in that 2014 movie). It was something for audience to reflect the potential destruction of these monsters and the importance of a leader (call it King) of the Titans. Which would explain the large screen time for Godzilla, Monster Zero and other monsters. Unfortunately though, this resulted to little development of the humans' characters and obviously the very weak plot (it was very standard and unoriginal). So many of the cast here were introduced but they did not seem to leave major impression, apart from my personal favorite Dr. Serizawa (played nicely by Ken Watanabe).

There was not much to say about movie of this size, except that it really satisfied my hunger to see a movie about big monster fight against even bigger monsters. It is a movie probably best suited for people who like this kind of actions. Likely it would have difficulty to appeal to the most critical viewers due to its thin plot. But at least to me, I enjoyed this a lot. The movie had 132 minutes duration where it mostly focus on the monsters. Whenever one of them were shown and started to bring disaster, we would be in awe and feeling really intense by their appearance. Other than Godzilla & monster Zero (aka Ghidorah) there were also Rodan and Mothra, where each had its own specialty and I love every one of them.

Aside from the wonderful special effects, the sound effects were also fantastic. Most of the scenes were shown in the dark, so I would suggest to see this one in theater with good & bright screen. Oh the music were also quite awesome as the suspense was really felt throughout the fights scenes. There were very little light moments in here except for few brief comments from one of the military personnel (played by O'Shea Jackson Jr - Long Shot, Straight Outta Compton etc). Due to its long duration, it would be advisable to go to the rest room before the start of the movie to avoid missing major scenes (my wife luckily went once during scenes which were easily explainable). Btw, there was a post end credit scene which I think would be related to another movie they planned to release in 2020, titled: Godzilla vs. Kong. That would be a really really interesting and intriguing prospect. Cannot wait to see how the filmmakers could pull it off.

Overall, I thought this was a great monster vs monster movie. A film best seen as a monster movie to be enjoyed without worrying about the plot or the human characters development. If your aim is to have a good time at the cinema and see the magic of realistic big Titans fight, then you should be satisfied like I did. But if plots and other aspects are what you need to enjoy a movie, then this might not be to your liking. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
