LIFE- A Good Old Fashion Alien Kind of Movie

The trailer to this movie had been shown in the cinemas for a couple of weeks now. When the movie finally premiered on Wednesday, it coincided with another movie that we had been wanting to see for quite sometime, i.e Power Rangers and we decided to see that one first. As we would be busy with our staycation this weekend, we only have the time to see this yesterday and my wife bought the ticket for 7.15 PM show at Setiabudi. After finishing my work which took longer time than I anticipated, I was able to reach the location 20 minutes from time. So let us start with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

In the most expensive international space station in history which was orbiting outside the earth, its six crew members were given the task of handling and analyzing the life form found in planet Mars. This life form was the first proof of an extraterrestrial life and therefore it garnered the attention from the whole world.

The crew consisted of people from various countries and led by its commander Katerina (Olga Dihovichnaya). There was the biologist Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare - Jupiter Ascending), the representative from Japan named Sho Kendo (Hiroyuki Sanada - The Wolverine, 47 Ronin etc). There was also a crew named Dr. David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal - Night Crawler, Everest etc) who had been living in the station for over a year. Another crew was Dr. Miranda North (Rebecca Ferguson - Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, The Girl on The Train etc) who was in charge of the medical aspects of the crew. And last but not least, there was a technician crew named Rory Adams (Ryan Reynolds - Definitely, Maybe, Deadpool etc) who was the fun guy and loved to joke around.

This life form was given the name Calvin by a student on earth and was being analyzed in details by Hugh. He was later able to revive Calvin from his long hybernation. Calvin started to grow little by little every day. After some carelessness, Calvin's growth seemed to be halted which created the uneasiness of all the crew, especially with Hugh. He decided to do some stimulation using electric current, which really did the trick and Calvin seemed to be awaken from his brief sleep and grew even faster and was having a greater intelligence with high survival instinct.

So how would Calvin adapt to the life at this station? Would he be safe enough to brought back to earth for further analysis? Or he would endanger of the people's life? Find them all in this science fiction, thriller on space movie.

End of Brief Story Linei

Wow, it has been a while since we were entertained with this kind of movie. This is a good old fashion scifi thriller movie with the suspense and survival as the basis ingredient like in Alien quadrology movies. What I loved about this movie was the thrill and tense feeling of what would happen next and also the suspenseful nuance. The other great thing was the trailer of the movie which did not reveal too much of the movie. It did however gave a different impression on the film where it seemed to be a drama movie, but apparently it was more of an action movie. Unlike the previous other movies lately which showed the life at space like Passengers where the trailer gave impression of action alien movie but turned out to be more like romantic movie.

I also loved the special effects of Calvin, and the special effects of the crews' floating movements in the space station which created the realistic feeling of people really in a gravity free location, including the floating food and other stuffs. Another point that I loved about this movie was the sound effects which were pretty awesome and resulting to audience's shocked feeling. The movie also had some sad and touching moments, plus brief funny moments which usually involved Rory's jokes.

The early parts of the movie may be a bit more like drama and also made us wonder what kind of movie this was. But once we reached almost 1/3 of the film, we immediately realized that this movie would provide us a good nice suspenseful experience. The characters in the movie were only 6 people, and there was not a lot of introduction to these characters. Another thing that I like was the ending. Oh ya, there was no end credit scene at all in this movie.

For those of us who had been longing to see this kind of movie, I am pretty sure you would not be disappointed watching this film. But if you are not really in the mood for suspenseful  kind of alien movie, or you prefer an intelligent mystery kind of alien movie like Arrival, then this might not be to your liking. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
