The Girl with All The Gifts - A Unique Zombies Movie

I have mentioned in my previous posts that I got some vouchers from Cinemaxx theater for winning a quiz they held and there was another voucher that I still need to utilize before it expired on 24 November. Since there was only 1 movie left that I had not watched in Cinemaxx (the other one was a supernatural horror movie that I did not want to watch if it was not a full house), I decided to watch this one yesterday. It was only playing in Plaza Semanggi and just 1 show per day at 2 PM. After reaching the location at 1 PM, I immediately exchange the voucher for the ticket and wait for a while until the theater was opened at 2PM (show started 15-20 minutes after that). Let's proceed with the movie itself.

Brief Story Line (possible spoiler)

Movie started with the scene of a young girl named Melanie (played by newcomer Senia Nannua) who was living in a cell block. In the morning, two soldiers would be taking her out of the cell block, in a wheelchair where her hands, feet and head were all strapped to the wheelchair, leaving no room for her to move around. She and 19 other similar type children were brought out of their cell blocks to another room where they were given lessons by a teacher named Ms. Justineau (Gemma Arterton - Quantum of Solace, Clash of Titants etc). It was shown that she was very fond of the children, especially to Melanie who seemed to be the smartest of them all.

Meanwhile, there was a doctor named Caldwell (Glenn Close - Fatal Attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy, Damages TV series and many more) who seemed to take interest on the children as well. She believed that these children possessed something that could cure the disease. Dr. Caldwell only see these children as subject of her experiment to cure the sickness that have infected most people around the world. She was aided by another Doctor named Selkirk (Anamaria Marinca) as well as the soldiers led by Sgt. Parks (Paddy Considine - The Bourne Ultimatum, Macbeth etc) who was not a fan of these children and especially did not like Melanie.

One day, when Dr. Caldwell was trying to perform operation to find the cure, the camp was suddenly raided by the hungries (people infected with the bacteria aka zombies) and a small band of people consisted of Sgt Parks, Dr. Caldwell, Ms. Justineau, Private Gallagher, Private Dillon and also Melanie had to escape from the base camp and move to a safer place called Beacon.

So could these few people reach their destination and be safe from the zombies chase? What was so special about Melanie and the other kids that could help to save civilization? Find them all in this interesting take on the post apocalyptic zombie drama movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well this turned out to be a different kind of zombie movie. It was more of a drama than a thriller/action type. The start of the movie was a bit mysterious with audience kept wondering what the movie was all about. Until about half an hour or so, the zombies started to show, and movie pace suddenly became suspenseful and thrilling. However, there were not entirely zombie chasing from start till finish. Instead it's more of a suspense drama of survival with some intriguing part of what actually Melanie had that was so worthy according to Dr. Caldwell.

The zombies here were very quick, and there was something specific on the zombies in this movie that was totally different than any other similar movie. And this specific thing was what made this movie unique and had a glimpse of very suspenseful scene in the middle. There was also another different characteristic which you would see towards the end of the movie which made this movie stand out in term of originality.

This movie was adapted from a novel by the same title written by M. R. Carey who sometimes wrote comic books for Vertigo with notable works such as Lucifer (I wrote about that series few months ago) and Hellblazer. In addition, the movie itself was a British movie (not those Hollywood movie) hence the British accent on the characters. I also enjoy the performance of the newcomer Senia Nannua who I believe did a tremendous job of becoming this special girl. The sound effects were great and special effects were pretty decent. Overall, it's quite satisfying with such limited budget compared to the blockbuster Hollywood movies.

So if you happen to still have some time in the next 2 days time, you can still watch this movie now in Indonesia as most likely by Wednesday, this movie would no longer play in the theaters. You can certainly enjoy this different type of zombie movie, but please do not bring children to this movie. It's quite bloody one and not suitable for kids (though again there was a family who brought their child in the theater. Shocking!). Anyway if you are not into this kind of zombie drama movie, then perhaps you can watch different movies. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
