VISIONS - A surprisingly Little Bit Different Kind of Supernatural Horror Movie

As usual during another one of our weekend staycation with my wife (this time we were staying in a hotel outside Jakarta), I would not miss out on watching a movie that I never saw before in the hotel room. After browsing through the available channels on TV, I decided to watch this movie as it was part of the Saturday premiere of new movie. There was another movie which may have more quality playing in HBO (titled Steve Jobs), but as that channel was not available, I chose to watch the one playing in Fox Movies Premium. Apparently, to get ourselves ready for Halloween night on 31 October, the channel was playing horror movies every night at 8PM Indonesia time till that day. And so let's get on with the movie itself.

Brief Story Line

Eveleigh Maddox (Isla Fisher - Confessions of A Shopaholic, Now You See Me etc) was involved in a car accident where a baby died as a result. Despite her husband David (Anson Mount - Walk the Talk, Non-stop etc) trying to convince her that it was not her fault, Eve still felt guilty and having nervous breakdown & stress. A year later, Eve and David moved to another town and wanted to open a vineyard where they put all their money into this new place. Eve was now pregnant and seemed happy staying in the new place.

As a part of introduction of the new couple to the town folks, Victor Napoli (John de Lancie - Crank: High Voltage, Star Trek New Generation TV series etc) who came from a long line of wine maker hosted a party. The famous wine distributor named Helena Knoll (Joanna Cassidy - The Grudge 2, Body of Proof TV series etc) also came to this party. While she was going to the rest room inside the house, Eve saw Helena like possessed and was surprised when Eve touched her.

David suggested that Eve go for yoga so she could exercise and strengthen her pregnancy. She met a fellow pregnant woman named Sadie (Gillian Jacobs - Community TV series) and easily befriended wit her. After starting to experience dreams and hallucinations, David requested Eve to take anti depression medicines again. However she was reluctant as she wanted to safe guard her future child. Sadie also opposed to the idea and reminded Eve that baby was more important than David's disturbed feeling. Sadie also suggested that they find out what kind of dark history might have happened in Eve's house which could resulted to the supernatural activity but there seemed to be no such thing.

Eventually, the hallucinations became more and more frequent and disturbing that Eve finally take on her doctor's advice (played by Jim Parsons - The Big Bang Theory TV series) to start taking her medication again and it made her lost her visions. Few months later when her pregnancy was in the final month, she ran into Sadie again who reminded her about the better condition she would be if she no longer took the anti depression medicine. This resulted Eve to start having visions again, but now she suspected that it might have something to do with her husband.

So what was the reason for Eve to have these visions? Was it the spirit of the house that was haunting her again? Or was it really having connection to her husband? You can find the answers to them all and understand them if you watch the movie closely until the end.

End of Brief Story Line

The movie seemed to be just like any other spiritual horror movie where you would be surprised occasionally in certain scenes usually with the sound effect/music that would make you jump off your seat. But as the movie continue and story unfolding, it did give you the element of surprise of the twists. I kind of enjoy those surprises as they made the movie became different than those stereotype horror movies. After watching it for two third of the movie suddenly the reality hit us (well at least to me who was watching it alone as my wife did not want to watch it with me since it was a supernatural horror movie).

There was no real cool special effects in this movie. The story itself was so so, but as I said, I like the twist that was quite surprising to me. The film also had surprisingly quite well known movie & TV stars like Isla Fisher and also Eva Longoria (as Eve's best friend Eileen), plus Gillian Jacobs & Jim Parsons.

I am not sure if this movie played in Indonesian theater last year, but if it did not, then perhaps this film could be an alternative option if you are looking for a little bit different supernatural horror movie. As it just premiered yesterday night, I am pretty sure it will play quite frequently in the next week. You can also consider watching this in preparation for the Halloween night in around 2 weeks time.

Ooh I would not recommend to watch this movie if you are pregnant or your wife's pregnant, or heck if anybody in your family is pregnant. And do not forget that this kind of movie is definitely not recommended for children.

Happy watching!
