Fear Street Part 2: 1978 - Second Part of the Trilogy which Amazingly did not Feel Like a Filler

I already posted the first part of this horror trilogy last week and as I was really looking forward to the second part, I watched this one as soon as I could yesterday. So let's get on to it immediately.

Brief Story Line

This second part focused on the events that occurred in 1978, during the summer camp of teens from Shadyside and Sunnyvale in Nightwing camp. Just like in the first part, these two groups were always at each other's throat. Ziggy (Sadie Sink - Stranger Things TV series season 2 onwards etc) who was from Shadyside was being bullied by Sheila (Chiara Aurelia). However, camp counselor Nick Goode (Ted Sutherland) from Sunnyvale was always defending Ziggy.

Meanwhile, Ziggy's older sister Cindy Berman (Emily Rudd) was having strained relationship with her old friend Alice (Ryan Simpkins) as they cope with Shadyside's bleak future. But when one of the counselors was suddenly possessed and started murdering people in the camp, Cindy, Alice and the rest had to work together to survive.

And what would happen to these kids? Find them all in this horror slasher movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When I watched this film, I could not help to feel a strong sense of Friday the 13th movies which were mostly set in summer camp and its first film was from 1980 (not far from 1978). But just like in the first part, this movie also had a bit of supernatural element with the character Sarah Fier the witch. So it has a bit of difference in that area.

This movie's early part was a bit too slow to my opinion, with too much focus on the introduction of the characters in Nightwing camp. It took a while before the murders actually started. From then onwards though, the story was full of suspense and thrills. What I actually loved the most was the musical score. My goodness, I was kept on edge due to the truly suspenseful feeling created by the nonstop music and the increasing sound as the killer kept on coming.

Just like in any other slasher movies, this one also used the formula of jump scare with some bloody gore scenes. Oh one thing that set this one apart from the first movie was this had more sex scenes and it also has some nudity as well. It seemed the director Leigh Janiak was quite inspired by the movies I mentioned earlier where it also has some of those scenes.

The cast here did their job nicely. Credit has to be given to Sadie Sink who looked fitting in the role of Ziggy (it's actually a bit similar to her character in Stranger Things). Aside from the unfamiliar faces in the movie, there were people who I have seen before like Gillian Jacobs (Visions etc) as adult C. Berman, Jordana Spiro (Ozark TV series etc) as Nurse Mary Lane and Michael Provost (Insatiable TV series etc) as counselor Kurt.

My favorite moment in this movie was actually the surprise towards the end. It was refreshing to have this sort of thing in a slasher movie. And as a second part of a trilogy, this one did not feel like a filler at all. Because of its different characteristics (slasher in summer camp compared to slasher in a city), made this one did not really feel like a sequel. There was a scene in the opening and ending that tied it nicely with the first and third movie. The only thing that I thought would make it more enjoyable for me was a shorter character introductions in the early part. However, as I said earlier, the suspense after that was really awesome, making it still a satisfactory.

So if you have watched the first movie and you want to complete your trilogy experience, definitely watch this one. I myself could not wait to watch the final part next week.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
