(TV SERIES) Big Sky Season 1 (Part 1) - Fast Paced, Intense and Suspenseful Series Adapted from Best Selling Novel Series by C. J. Box

As I said in one of my earlier post, last week was full of new movies and series that were available on various platforms. This interesting series was actually released on Disney+ more than a month ago. But it was customary for them to release only few episodes first and the rest were released once a week which finally completed last weekend. So without further ado, let's get into it.

Brief Story Line

Set in Helena County, Montana, private detective Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury - Brave New World TV series etc) was having strained relationship with her friend Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick - The Dark TowerWu Assassins TV series etc) due to some problem relating to Jenny's husband and Dewell's partner Cody (Ryan Phillippe - I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cruel Intentions etc). However, when the girlfriend of Hoyt's son, Danielle (Natalie Alyn Lind - The Gifted TV series etc) and her younger sister Grace (Jade Pettyjohn - School of Rock TV series etc) were missing, they all set aside their differences and worked together to try and find them.

With the recommendation from Dewell & Hoyt agency's receptionist Denise Brisbane (Dedee Pfeiffer - For Your Love TV series etc), they enlisted the help from Montana state trooper named Rick Legarsky (John Carroll Lynch - The Founder, American Horror Story TV series etc). It was later suspected that the disappearance of Danielle and Grace might coincide with the missing of a sex worker Jerrie (Jesse James Keitel). Meanwhile a trucker named Ronald (Brian Geraghty - The Hurt Locker, Chicago P.D TV series etc) who was always criticized by his mother (Valerie Mahaffey - French Exit etc) might have key importance in finding the girls.

And how would the story conclude? Find them all in this suspenseful and intense series.

End of Brief Story Line

After watching the whole 9 episodes of the first season, I got to say that I was quite satisfied with this series. I was literally hooked after the pilot episode which was fast paced, but what made me immediately could not stop was the shocking twist that I never thought would happen. It was one of the most shocking moment I had experienced in the first episode of a new TV series. After that, we got the suspense throughout the first half.

Once I reached the second half though, the suspense was significantly reduced. However, it was still intriguing on how the story would conclude. I did really like the 9th episode which was intense and had a good enough ending to make me quite excited with the second half of the first season. I read about this series and found out that the 1st season was supposedly having 16 episodes, but they only aired the first 9 episodes while the remaining 7 would start airing in mid April 2021. So have to wait for few more months before finishing the whole season.

From the names shown in this series, I noticed it was based on The Highway series of books by C. J. Box (quite successful author of best seller Joe Picket series). If the first season is a success, who knows they might continue with second season from another novel/book. The book itself was adapted into TV series by David E. Kelley who has created so many successful shows including his latest mini series The Undoing which was nominated for various awards.

Aside from the suspense and shocking twists in the series, I quite like the characters. Dewell and Hoyt chemistry was enjoyable to watch, while the young Jade Pettyjohn was a joy to see. Her appearance as this intelligent younger sister was really spot on. Btw I also like seeing John Carrol Lynch and Brian Geraghty who I thought fit perfectly as their written characters. The rest were generally OK and provided adequate supporting roles.

Overall I found this series to be pretty entertaining with the first half being fast pace, intense and suspenseful, but it went down a bit in the second half though the finale was worth the wait. My most favorite episode was definitely the 5th one which was quite a complete episode to me and felt a bit like a culmination of the previous episodes with amazing ending. I also felt the 9th episode was a close second favorite. So if you are into the kind of series with above quality created by one of the most successful TV series creator and adapted from best selling novel, then this should be entertaining for you. You can stream the full 9 episodes in Disney+.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
