Start Up - A Nice Enough Drama Movie about Growing Up

My wife and I were not really aware about this movie as it did not get the hype and huge advertisement by the cinemas that showed the film. I only realized it when I saw the tweet from one of the twitter account about movies in Indonesia that I followed and when we were looking for movies we could see in CGV. So off we went to see the film yesterday noon. OK let's go straight to it then.

Brief Story Line

Two best friends Go Taek-Il (Park Jung-min - Tazza: One Eyed Jack etc) and Woo Sang-pil (Jung Hae-In - While You Were Sleeping TV series etc) were struggling to make something out of their young lives. Taek-Il was living with his authoritative mother (Yum Jung-ah - A Tale of Two Sisters, Sky Castle TV series) who was a former volleyball athlete, while Sang-pil was living with his grandmother.

Feeling pressured and with a bit of luck, Taek-Il managed to work in a Chinese restaurant owned by the kind-hearted Mr. Gong (Kim Jong-soo) where he met and befriended with a heavily built cook Geo-suk (Ma Dong Seok - AshfallThe Gangster, The Cop and The Devil etc), the delivery man Goo-man (Kim Kyung Duk) and later on a runaway girl (Choi Sung-eun). Meanwhile Sang-pil who needed money to survive started to work as debt collector together with his senior Dong-hwa (Yoon Gyung-ho).

As the two went on different paths, they had to quickly grow up in order to survive. And what would happen to them both? Find them all in this nice enough drama.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie was just as I expected, filled with drama and touching moments combined with some comedy which did not take the spotlight from the main premise of the two young men's growing up story. From the very beginning where we were introduced to the main characters Taek-Il and Sang-pil who each had their own problems but always supported each other, we were already grown attached to them. We were really rooting for them when situation seemed to be dire and they realized that growing up was not as easy as they thought would be.

The story became more interesting from the moment Taek-Il started to work at the restaurant, particularly when he met with colorful characters there. My wife and I liked the delivery man and obviously Ma Dong-Seok's character which was a bit different than his usual role. We also loved seeing the very kind & patient restaurant owner (performed by Kim Jong-soo who coincidentally played the restaurant owner in the hit movie Extreme Job). My wife's personal favorite was definitely Yum Jung-ah who she was already familiar with and played the loving but very firm mother.

Aside from the nice growing up story itself, I also felt that the movie was having a quite realistic situation where young men might face in their lives. Although some parts were obviously dramatized a bit to give the dramatic effect to audience. There was even a bit of action (fighting) as well in here to spice up the film. With a duration of 1 hr 42 minutes, it did not feel overly long or too short to deliver the message.

For a movie about growing up, I think this one was pretty good. The main cast did their job adequately with Park Jung-min and Jung Hae-in both provided convincing performance as the two lead characters. Some emotional moments would obviously be available in this kind of drama movie and with a nice enough ending, made the movie gave a good feeling to audience (even if I thought the problems were too easily solved in a rather predictable way). Overall it was quite interesting drama movie. Something that you could enjoy with your family. But do not expect this to be an action comedy movie (despite having Ma Dong Seok's name). So if you are interested in this kind of story, then you could give this a try.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
