21 Bridges - A Pretty Entertaining Action Thriller Movie with Some Easily Guessed Twists

This movie was actually scheduled to be released last week but it never did and was replaced with another film. It was finally shown last night, and lucky for me and my wife, it was playing in the cinema near our home so we were able to see it there without any hassle. OK let us get on with the movie.

Brief Story Line

In the Manhattan city, two small time criminals Ray Jackson (Taylor Kitsch - American Assassin, Only the Brave etc) and Michael Trujillo (Stephan James - If Beale Street Could Talk, Homecoming TV series etc) were trying to rob some cocaine. But it went bad when they encountered some police officers and ended up being hunted by the whole New York Police Department.

Meanwhile a police detective named Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman - Black Panther, Get On Up etc) who had reputation as the killer of cop-killers was assigned to the case especially by Captain McKenna (J. K. Simmons - RenegadesKungfu Panda 3 etc). Andre was supported by Narcotics Department detective Frankie Burns (Sienna Miller - Live by Night, Layer Cake etc).

With time running out before the robbers left the city, Andre and Frankie had to run against time to capture the robbers. So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this entertaining enough action thriller movie.

End of Brief Story Line

You know I was surprised that I found myself pretty entertained by this film. I originally had my doubts as I thought it would be just a so so action movie and probably a bit heavy on the story or the case investigation. Turned out though that the movie was pretty intense, maybe not from the start but it began from the moment the robbery was done (which did not take too long).

Since that moment, we were shown the intensity of the manhunt which was done quite expertly to my opinion as the suspense was maintained quite well. There was even some twists which supposedly added some surprise to the audience. However, to our opinion, the twists were too easy to guess. I am not sure whether it was because my wife and I watched too many movies, but we suspected something from quite early and in the end it turned out our suspicions were proven.

Though the twists were too easy to guess, we did enjoy the action sequence. I was amazed how the shootout were done quite well in this movie. And what made me really satisfied was the sound effects. For a studio with Dolby 7.1 Surround system, it was really perfect as it enhanced our experience especially during those action part. The sound of bullets shot from all around and the bullet case dropping on the floor, plus the special effects when they were shot through the cars, windows and doors were amazing. Oh the musical background was great as well, particularly during the chasing scene which made the suspense feel more intensified.

The cast itself was quite OK. Chadwick Boseman seemed perfect for this role and it was nice to see him in different part other than superhero. J. K. Simmons was portraying a person who he seemed to be accustomed to (a tough person who did lots of yelling). The two criminals suit their roles too, but I was actually surprised to see the name Taylor Kitsch as Ray, as I barely recognized him.

Overall I thought this movie was pretty entertaining. It had its moments and the action sequence did not disappoint. There were some mysteries which unfortunately were too easy to solve. The duration of the movie which was less than 100 minutes was quite perfect as it did not feel overly long and it also had a satisfying ending. The movie also more suitable for adults as there were quite a number of heavy violent scenes (it was rated R in the US). So if you are looking for a good old fashion action thriller, this one should be nice enough with some intense manhunt scene, as long as you don't mind with the easily guessed twists.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
