Brief Story Line
Navy SEAL Colonel James Hale (Dave Bautista - My Spy: The Eternal City, Stuber etc) had been living in Hawaii all his life with his wife Leila (Roimata Fox - Chief of War mini series etc) and their two young children. Meanwhile his half brother Jonny (Jason Momoa - A Minecraft Movie, Dune etc) had been working as police detective in Oklahoma and in relationship with Valentina (Morena Baccarin - Greenland 2: Migration, Deadpool & Wolverine etc). James and Jonny had not spoken with each other for many years, but everything changed when their father became victim of hit and run which both of them suspected foul play. Despite the warning from Detective Sergeant Karl Rennet (Stephen Root - Heads of State, Barry TV series etc) not to interfere, James and Jonny investigated the incident by themselves.
With the help from Pika (Jacob Batalon - Spider-man: No Way Home, Reginald the Vampire TV series etc) and their cousin Nani (Frankie Adams - The Expanse TV series, Mortal Engines etc) who was working for Governoor Peter Mahoe (Temuera Morrison - Moana 2, Once Were Warriors etc), Jonny and James found possible involvement of wealthy business man Marcus Robichaux (Claes Bang - The Northman, Dracula 2020 TV series etc). Things became very dangerous for them with the appearance of Yakuza led by their vicious leader Nakamura (Miyavi - Hell Dogs: In The House of Bamboo, Bleach live version etc).
So what would happen with Jonny and James and how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well this movie was just as I expected. It was filled with explosive action and some comedy involving the two lead characters, the discipline cool headed family man James Hale and his completely opposite younger half brother Jonny. Now I did not watch the full clip of the trailer but I did caught glimpses of explosions in the back ground which truly did not disappoint as the action was great, albeit sometimes a bit over the top. Although to my surprise the fight scenes were quite brutal & violent and full of coarse languages, this film was not R rated but 16+ instead.
The comedy though was not exceptional to my personal opinion and was only supported by the excellent Jason Momoa. I think this role really suited him perfectly, but I felt Dave Bautista was not too convincing. Sometimes he seemed to try too hard to become this character. However his chemistry with Momoa was pretty enjoyable to see. The rest of the cast were pretty decent with Morena Baccarin who looked to enjoy portraying her character here. In addition to the names above, there were also brief appearances of Branscombe Richmond (Renegade TV series, Paradise City etc) as Mr. K, Lydia Peckham (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Nuremberg etc) as Marcus' wife Monica, Maia Kealoha (Lilo & Stitch live version etc) and Josua Tuivavalagi as James children Lani & Kai respectively plus few others. There was also the late David Hekili Kenui Bell in sadly his second and final appearance after Lilo & Stitch where he played with Maia Kealoha.
I believe the film was enjoyable because of the wonderful work by director Angel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle, Menudo: Forever Young mini series etc) and writer Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project, creator of Warrior TV series etc). I also believed it had high production budget as could be seen from the quality of everything including its special effects. Critics seemed to be impressed too as proven by its almost 80% Rotten Tomatoes rating and this kind of film would definitely be liked by audience. I noticed it already made the number one movie chart of Prime Video in Indonesia in just a day, and surely globally.
I enjoyed all the action sequence here especially the chaotic scene involving helicopter which was absolutely crazy and super intense. I also liked the early fight scenes with Jason Momoa and the car chase in the middle, but the climax was pretty standard to me. Oh his hilarious name calling to everyone was also fun to watch. The movie itself had pretty long duration of 122 minutes including closing credits without any mid or post end credit scenes. Overall this movie was really entertaining. It would be great to see in the cinema with wonderful sound system, but even watching on my TV was fun as well. So if you are fans of buddy cop action comedy movie, I am sure this one would be to your liking and you would enjoy yourself as much as I did.
Happy watching!
