Project Y - A Very Dark, Intense and Heavy Crime Thriller Movie

This movie was supposed to be released in all Indonesian cinemas on Friday, but in the morning when my wife and I were choosing where to see, we were surprised that it was not available in the biggest cinema chain. Hence we decided to see two other movies while postponing this the following day. Later that noon, the movie suddenly appeared on the list of that particular chain, however since we already bought other tickets, we only saw it on Saturday. All right then, let's just get on with the film.

Brief Story Line

Story focused on two women who were very close like sisters, i.e the calm straight thinking Mi-sun (Han Soo-hee - Gyeongseong Creature, Nevertheless TV series etc) who was working as escort girl and the impatient strong willed Do-kyung (Jeon Jong-seo - Ballerina, Queen Woo TV series etc) who worked as driver. They had saved all their money to start their own business. Unfortunately their plan was ruined due to some unforeseen circumstances.

With no money, Mi-sun and Do-kyung came across some info about cash stash hidden by crime boss Blackjack (Kim Sung-cheol - Arthdal Chronicles TV series, The Night Owl etc) and decided to steal it, although it would be very dangerous. They later sought help from Do-kyung's mother Choi Ga-yeong (Kim Shin-rok - Uprising, Undercover High School TV series etc) despite their heavily strained relationship.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This film sounded interesting when I read the synopsis and saw a glimpse of its trailer before. Frankly it was the reason why I was intrigued, while my wife almost never rejected watching South Korean movies. Turned out the film was pretty good. It has a rather intricate plot and I was having a bit difficulty understanding the story at first (probably not concentrating enough cause there were several parties involved that I got mixed up). Luckily as the movie progressed and with the help from my wife, I could keep it up and understood better.

Anyway the movie felt very dark, gloomy and sometimes a bit depressing, especially looking at the hard life endured by both Mi-sun and Do-kyung. But thing really became interesting when they devised the plan to steal the money. Using their wit to fool some people and with a bit of dramatic turn of event, they seemed to be turning their lives around, at least for a while until things became really bad. The introduction of Do-kyung's mother also added intensity due to her unpredictable character. I thought the villain was portrayed convincingly by Kim Sung-cheol who played a complete different kind of person from the one he acted in that famous Prison Playbook.

Aside from the names I mentioned above, there were appearances of support cast like Lee Jae-kyoon (Shark: The Beginning, The Manipulated TV series etc) as Seok-gu who knew about Blackkack's slash fund and Jung Young-joo (Miss Fortune, Salon de Holmes TV series etc) as Blackjack's right hand woman nicknamed Bull. However it was obvious that the lead were Han Soo-hee and Jeon Jong-seo who did very decent job in here. The film was directed by Lee Hwan (Young Adult Matters, Park Hwayoung etc) and written by Kwak Jae-min (Badland Hunters, Concrete Market etc) & Oh Yu-kyung. Btw it had world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival as well as shown in Busan International Festival in 2025, though it was only released in Korean theaters in January 2026. Though it was quite positively regarded, commercially the movie was not a big success which I believed was due to the strong Festival film feel and not the kind that would delight general audience.

Despite the premise seemed to have an element of heist, it was not the light or sophisticated kind. The drama and thriller felt stronger with some heavy violence shown. The two lead characters were not the most brilliant or experienced and not even good in fighting (despite both actresses previously played heroines in other series), but their perseverance was what made us symphatize with them. Besides, the ending was really satisfying for me and my wife. The movie had duration of 110 minutes without having any mid or post end credit scene. So if you are looking for a crime drama thriller movie with such story, then I believe you would appreciate this one. But if you prefer a lighter kind of film full of actions or sophisticated heist, then this one definitely would not be to your liking. The choice is yours.
